The new tank that i bought for my bettas came with an undergravel filter...i had read in the past that these aren't good for tanks, but i can't erally remember much about why. what are your guys' opinions on them? i can't even figure out how they actually filter, seems like just a bubbler to me.

I think this might help, it gives some advantages and disadvantages of each filter type. I hope this helps you out. Good luck, and congrats on the new tank! :D

Thanks for the link! I'll put up pics of the new tank when I get it all set up, right now I am treating one of my betta's for a fin injury/disease (not really sure...this is the second time....) so once he is better I'll have both of them in there.

Undergravel filters tend to be ok for fish such as Bettas as they don't create too much of a currant which is ideal for Bettas as they like flat water. The downside to them is that they are harder to keep clean if thats any help :) Oh and goodluck with your poorly Betta, hope he's feeling better very soon :)

I also was unsure of undergravel filters but after reading this, http://www.bestfish.com/ug.html, it really clued me in on the pros and cons of them. I hope this helps.
