Omg, You'll never believe what I saw the other day at work. Like holy crap, I was scared out of my mind!
Usual day..spays and neuteres and other surgeries come in with blood work to be done, or none whatso ever..it's up to the owners, since it is extra cost. Anyways, it's nothing new that owners don't want to spend the extra dough just to be safe...there pet is the healthiest..right...yeah. Anyways, this one cat came in and we put it in the cage, and then went about our businesses drawing up meds for the upcoming surgeries, doing calculations, dealing with the normal animals in the hospital! Anyways, one of the other techs went and gave pre-med to the cat that was for front declaw and neuter. Fine, whatever, he kinda freaked out, but, he got the meds. fair enough. Then about 30 minutes later we brought him out to induce him and take him into surgery. Well, he was acting a little weird, and we pushed it off as the drugs may have really hit him hard. One of the other techs proceeded to scruff him and lie him on his side, while the vet took alcohol and squirted some on his leg and was ready to give the injection when all of a sudden, his head went straight back, his front and back legs were all straight out, and stiff as anything and his mouth was gapped open. his legs started to twitch...We thought he was dying or dead. he was breahing and turning blue. Then as the vet touched him head to see if she could look at his eyes, he spazed out, jumped inthe air and ran off around the hospital. Needless to say, we didn't proceeed with the surgery and called him owners, who only came in 5 hours later to see him.
We told them what happened and that we saw a cat a month ago do the same thing and ended up dying. The lady (who came) was un concerned and just said that he is a spaz and does that. That she STILL didn't want blood work and wanted the surgery to be done either today or tomorrow. Like holy frig., We tried to ask her...do you want your cat to stay alice or die???
Anyways, she finally agreed to the blood work after we talked to her and her bf again. he convinced her it was a good idea. The blood work showed nothing, but at where I work we pair it with an EKG, which showed a mild heart condition. This time we didn't give him any premed, just went and induced him. Usually it takes atleast 2 1/2 mls of propofol to get them enough to intubate (so they can breath). nope...he told less than a ml, and started to go blue. So they rushed him into surgery too hook himup to oxygen. Luckily, he survived the surgery.
like holy frig!!!!
