I'm thinking about buying a blue and gold macaw, but there's no way I'm spending 1500 without some kind of insurance or something. To some 1500 is spending money, but to me it's an investment and spending that much on one thing is silly to me unless you get some type of compensation in the event something terrible should happen. Any advice?

You need to go to a breeder so you will get a guarantee of the birds health. Buying a Blue and Gold is a lot of money and the bird will live a VERY LONG TIME. I have a Blue& Gold Macaw and although I adore mine they do require a LOT of attention (demand it) They can be quite loud so no apartment living this will never work out. Mine is not so noisey as some I had rescued in the past but he is in a bird room with 4 other large exotic birds so they tend to amuse each other with talk. You will also need an extremely large cage for it because of the long tail feathers. A cage this size is quite expensive also. By the time you have bought the bird and cage you will have already spent about $2500.00 or maybe a little more depending on cage brand. Do not buy an inadequate cage he will destroy anything not sturdy enough. Now you have cage and bird, ok he needs toys a quite a few to keep him accupied while in his cage. I make most of my own toys because large toys are very expensive. He will need a good quality food and lots of fruits and veggies. Be sure to get a cement perch to help keep his nails trimmed down a bit. Start working with him or her immediately if they are not tamed they can become a holy terror and you will never get him out of the cage without losing a finger or 2. Good luck in your search for a bird but please consider all aspects of owning a large bird. They require a vet visit once a yr also for check up.
