From what I know, danios, white clouds, and platys are supposed to be good starter fish. It takes about a month for the good bacteria to build up in your tank, so it's recommended that you wait a little bit before adding a whole bunch of fish. I'd start out with 3 or so (danios are schooling, so they do best in groups of 3 or more). Have fun picking out fish! :)

Actually, I cycled my tank with a fishless cycle so that I could avoid killing fish accidently. :)

With me, on the first day I prepped the water with no fish, I let the filter run along with the decor already in the tank. After a day or two, I would put in either feeder guppies or feeder goldfish (normally you can get 10-15 for about a dollar and a half in most pet stores!! This way you are not investing too much money on fish that may die during the cycle).

For saltwater, I use damsels. I had a pair of three striped damsels and a blue damsel in the tank for the cycling.

when me and my husband started our tank our local petstore recommened danios/ gold barbs/ any feeder fish because they are cheap and if they die during cycling they are in expensive to replace. Luckly ours all made it through and a its been a year and there still going strong. But a few years back i started getting into cichlids...no one ever told me about cycling a tank. I just filled it up..put the drops in to take out chlorine etc. and put the fish in. and non of my fish ever died. I guess I was lucky. My cichlid back home is going on 6 years right now. big sucker:D
