Hey everyone,
Ok I've had this cat for over 2 weeks now, (I'm taking care of it for a friend) and at first everything was fine and it pooped in it's litter box and I cleaned it everytime he did and and everything...but for the past 2 days, he's been pooing around the house...like in corners and even on my dining chairs! :(
He even pooped beside the litter box and not in it.
My friend's never had this problem, and I've searched the internet for an explanation but I can't find anything.
If you own a cat or know a lot about them, can you please explain why he's had a sudden change of behaviour?? or if there's anything I can do to get him back to his litter box??
Thanks

is the cat now in your home or still in his owners home? (im assuming yours since you said he went on your chairs). He may just be stressed about the new surroundings or maybe trying to get attention. Give the cat alot of attention and praise him/her whenever he does go in the litter box, and dont yell at the cat or rub its nose in it when it goes in the wrong place (as many people do with puppies). Is the litter box in an easy to get to/desireable place? But since he wernt next to it and not in it, he is probabl trying to get attention since he is in a new place with a new person and maybe mad at his owner for "abandoning" him.

oh, also, the cat may be having bowel problems such as diarrhea, but you didnt mention that the poop was runnier. He may simply not have time to get to the litter box, and going in corners sometimes means they are trying to go somewhere you wont find it b/c he knows it is bad, which would contradict the wanting attention thing, so i would see if the cat is going regularly.

Are you using the same litter brand or type that he is use to? If he doesn't like the litter he may go elsewhere. Some cats prefer granular, others sandy.

I also would put the poop back into the litter box and show him where its at. ;)

It could be food change or litter change, but it is most likely environment change

Make sure you clean the litter daily, he may be fussy.
To "retrain" him, put him in a small room with the litterbox. Check on him once in a while. If you see he's used the litterbox, praise him and let him out to play. If he misses, don't praise him, put the poo in the litter box, and leave. He'll relearn.

Good luck!
