The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote this week on the Sweeney-Spratt Amendment to the House Agriculture Appropriations Bill, ensuring that no federal tax dollars are used to slaughter horses for human consumption.
Americans don’t eat horsemeat. However, thousands of U.S. horses are slaughtered every year to satisfy overseas palates. Legislation is pending in Congress that would end horse slaughter in the United States. Unfortunately, while it is pending, horses continue to be slaughtered. The Sweeney-Spratt Amendment would stop the slaughter of horses for fiscal year 2006, giving us valuable time to push for passage of permanent legislation.
