Our dog, Clover is microchipped. It's actually put into that hollow place between their shoulderblades, and it's given as a shot -- it's that small! Since we adopted her, it was part of the adoption fee, but I believe our vet will microchip them for about $35.

All of the shelters and rescues around here have them, as well as many of the vets. Since Clover was originally found wandering the streets, I find it a very good investment!

most regions when liscensing your pet will also give a further discount for dogs who are spayed/neutered AND microchipped. If the dog is lost and relocated to a shelter or vet they can get ahold of you within a few hours and let you know where your dog/cat is so you can retrieve them rather than waiting days.

Forgot to mention, ours came with a collar tag that had a 1-800 number on it, and her chip number, so that people without scanners can call in and see where she belongs as well. :)

They really are worth the money.
