I feel bad that my hamsters have to eat hard food everyday of their lives besides occasionally some fruit and mealworms here and there... but is it okay if they have some cooked steak or porkchop or chicken? Besides, my hamsters deserve the best :p lol.. thanks for any replies!!!

I know that Hamsters can have cooked chicken... and eggs...
Not sure how much that helps you tho!! :p
I dont think I would be too keen to be giving my hammies steak tho
I try to avoid 'proper' meat really...I feed my hammies with the frame of mind... 'if they were in the wild.. would they eat it....
Cant really see a hamster chasing down a cow just cos its hungry!! lol :D
(That was meant as humor.. please dont take it as a personal attack - I know how touchy some people have got on these forums lately, so dont want to cause offense)

i dont know how good of an ide it is i mean your hammie would be just fine, just give her/him other treats such as :
*Dog biscuits
*Chopped hard boiled eggs
*Apple
*Carrot
*Corn
*Water Chestnut
*Broccoli and cauliflower
*Plain oats
*Health food (usually oil free and salt free) products such as museli, nuts and seeds.
*Cheese and other milk products for strong bones
*Cereal
*Bread (you can spread a thin layer of peanut butter)
*Diluted honey fed with a plastic spoon
Foods to avoid
*Chocolates
*Henbane
*Oak leaves
*Buttercups
*Laurel leaves
*Hemlock
*Garlic
*Onions
*Junk food
*Sticky/sharp food as these may cause trouble in your hamster's cheek pouch.
*Sweet and oily food as they causes obesity.
*Vegetables and other high moisture content food should be fed in moderation to prevent diarrhoea.
*Although hamsters are omnivorous, it is better and healthier to stick with a vegetarian diet. Some books had also suggested that consuming meat encourage the cannibalism of young by adult hamsters.
If you still want to feed your hammie meat go to http://www.hamsterific.com/ and read the diet& nutrition part... but mostly the meat section!!! :)

alot of people believe that but i dont, true they are mostly veggie eaters, but they can eat other stuff like cooked chicken.
they wont become canabalistic.

Hamsters are omnivores!!! they eat every thing that is there, but it has to be healthy for them.
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=omnivore
like steak isn't a meat that you would feed them, you have to do some reasearch before going out and feding them other stuff.

I've read a couple of books, magazines, and other websites on hamsters and they all say NO pork, plain, boiled chicken is OK, and some say beef is OK if it is also plain and boiled. A serving should be small, about the size of a dime.
As for meat-eating encouraging cannibalism, there are mixed opinions on that. My opinion is that babies are eaten when the mom feels they will not survive or she will not survive for whatever reason. Reasons like lack of food, babies touched by humans, nest disturbed, mom stressed by noise/changes, or a nervous, inexperienced new mom.
I've never heard of an adult hamster trying to kill another adult to eat it for food. They kill to protect babies or their territory.

The closest thing I have fed my hammies to any kind of meat is those milk dog bone things. They didnt even eat it. I wouldnt feed your hammie meat because it usually has preservatives and stuff and I just wouldnt give it to them. I know I am trying to ignore e but tater totts have loads of salt and its not to good for them.

as long as you feed a low quantity and dont do it often.. i think tatertots wont hurt the hamster at all =]

i can go to the whole foods market and their food are supposed to be safe.. like they dont feed their cows steroids. or have natural food instead of the kind that gives them the mad cow disease..

tator tots
peas
brocolli
bread
I'm thinking about putting a piece of pizza in there tomorrow w/the babies and Deb just to see what they do, lol. Should be fun to watch.

After feeding my hampsters brocolli the last few days, they LOVE IT! Also, I just gave them a "few" aka 2 very small potato chips. They seem to love them as well. Is there anything these guys DON'T eat? That seems to be a better question.

you know any animal will eat almost anything, the question is what is healthy and what isn't. Brocolli is ok, but potato chips? NO where do you come up whith these things, your son must be more mature then you. sorry that wasn't needed or was it? umm hmm.

i think most hamsters are happy eating veggies instead of other animals.

you can feed your hamster (syrians) just about anything as long as it isn't alot, and not often (make sense) tater tots are fine (and sound good right now, lol).
My initial reaction is no, because they have absolutely no k-9 teeth (those sharp teeth like dogs and cats have), but rats have to have a source of animal protine in their diet.
My girl gets the same thing as my rats, which includes a holistic dog food, I let her decide what she wants to eat, when we got her she was, obese, now she is trim. Everyone seems to think that syrians should be "husky", they really shouldn't be, they can and usually do run up to 8 miles a night, which should (with a proper diet) keep them fit.
I put all the mix in her bowl and let her decide if she wants to eat the dog food or not, I figure if her body is missing something, her body will "crave" that particular thing (the body's way of getting what it needs), and she will eat it.
Of course, that is ONLY my opinion and I could be totally off.

I feed my syrian things that i dont feed my dwarf. They have different bodily needs. I feed my syrian and my rats plain popcorn but not my dwarf. I feed my rats and syrian pretzels but not my dwarf because of the salt. I feed my dwarf crackers with no salt because it is bad for humans can you imagine what it would do to my dwarf. I guess people would disagree with some of the stuff I feed my hammies but I definantly would NEVER feed them steak or pizza (the greasiest food on earth besides potato chips. I dont even eat that stuff why would I give it to my hammies?) You should give you hammies meal worms or grubb worms or whatever they are called. Mine love those things and they are fairly cheap.

You seem liek a menace to this forum. That will only make ur hammies fat and unhealthy, and yet, you don't seem to care.
You should have hamsters or be posting on this site.

Well that RUDE dreamin.
I feed my hamster the same thing, and she is a fit and trim little girl.
This person came on here asking a question! (and though I sometimes/all the time *;)* reply harshly) They just wanted to know if something was SAFE to feed their hamster.
which is what a public forum is for.
Edit:
actually if you boil gril, or use something like a george forman gril, about 98% of the fat drips off. :)

What do you know... i save my hammys now from shelters. I dont feed my hammies anything until i find more information about it apperently. So how can you say i dont care? And quite it with the "you shouldnt have hamsters or be posting on this site" because its getting very old. We all still have our rights until getting banned. Whats the point of trying to get people to argue, its done enough damage to petshub as it is. Is it just like an obsessive compulsive disorder kind of thing? Sometimes i dont even know why i keep comming back :(
