We recently moved into an apartment with our mini dachsund. He has gotten used to going out for walks and to use the bathroom. When we leave him home alone though, he cries and barks and tears up the carpet and our neighbors are not the nicest people. We bought a kennel recently and let him get used to it with the door open and he seemed to like it. Problem is, as soon as you close the door and he is locked in, he starts shaking really bad, and wont stop licking the cage door. He breaths heavy like we have just been on a walk and whines making a gutteral sound like 'oh, oh'. As soon as the door is open again, he is fine, like nothing happened. Soon I will have to start leaving him in the kennel while I am gone and I want him to be ok inside. He is a small dog and it is a large kennel with more than enough room. Please help!

Sounds like an aiety attack. Try placing him in there with special treats.. like a kong, and bones and toys and even leave a radio on or a tv. Place a blanket that you have wrapped around you into the kennel. It will have your scent.

I know this post is rather old, but I wanted to comment on it. It sounds like the puppy is just doing what he can so that you'll react by letting him out. My doxie Claire litterally screamed and had her entire face wet from what I swear where tears from crying. I felt horrible but it's one of those things pups/dogs need to get used to if you're going to use a crate. I'd also recommend if you want to use the crate for housebreaking purposes not to use such a large crate. Also a larger crate is usually tall and he could climb the walls and fall and seriously injure himself :( With a large crate he'll also be able to pee/poo in one side and sleep/eat on the other which in a way lets him think it's alright to go inside.

I hope that in this time, things have started to get better. Hang in there, dachshunds are great dogs but they are a bit stubborn and hard to train. I'm sending hugs out to your doxie, I bet he's adorable!! :D
