As some of you may know, I recently got my first betta, Si. I had to choose between him and this other betta that I really wanted . I really, really, wanted the other one, but I was afraid he was a little too old, cause of his size. He was a beautiful black (like velvet) and blended red with a white beard. He was kinda fiesty too. If possible, how can you tell the estimated age of a betta or if he's gonna probably die soon? I didn't wanna pay $3.50 just to end up burrying him and seeing he woulda been my first that would be crummy. Also besides the obvious illnesses like, ick, bloat and wrot are there any other common diseases I should look out for in bettas? If he is still there I want to get him. So please help. Thanks :D

Fish go fast and I'll be going into town soon so PLEASE help. If you can give any advice or just say go for it. I really like him. I suppose if he has survived a week longer there, then I should get him. Hope for the best I guess. Any suggestions? Thanks :D

I think its probably just as young as the betta you got. cant really tell its age after its at its mature size.

Thanks so much to both of you. I'll get him if he's there. He really is a beautiful fish. :D They probably are the same age, seeing I've never seen him before. Thanks again. :)

OMG!!! $3.50 for a betta??? That's a good price.
The average lifespan seems to be about 2 years, and size just depends on the betta, this is best seen if you have access to a breeder and can check their spawn. The size difference is amazing, so size isn't a good way to determine age, really.
Bettas hate change, so make sure water temps are the same at waterchange time, you de-chlorinate the water and check the ph level.
Hmm.. what else? Get some multi-cure, or betta-fix/pima-fix/mela-fix. That combination should treat most things. Ich meds will cure both ich and velvet, which multicure should be able to as well, as, from memory, both contain melachite green.
