Our golden retriever is six months old and last week we noticed small scabs all over his body (chest, belly, legs...). The vet suggested that it may be a flea allergy, however I have never noticed a single flea or evidence of fleas on him so I'm not too sure about this. I guess we'll see if the flea medicine helps to clear anything up. Other than that, we have not changed his food or anything lately. I can't think of anything that might be causing this except for an allergy, however I can't think of anything that has changed... Any ideas/suggestions?

maybe he rubbed up against something outside? that is a little tricky to figure out. i hope he gets better.

Oh, I forgot, he also currently has an ear infection... He went to the vet for both the other day (I don't know which started first). Could the ear infection possibly be causing him to itch, scratch, and therefore causing the scabs?

if you dog had scabs on his head it could be in relation to scratching his ears. food allergies are tricky-sometimes an animal can be on a diet for years and concurrently, in a short period of time-develop and allergy.

has the veterinarian done a skin scraping?

The vet hasn't done a skin scraping yet. We were waiting to see if the flea medicine did anything first. How much is a skin scraping or allergy test?

that would have to be discussed with your vet.

some ideas to try while you are waiting to see improvements:
make a list of all the plants your dog comes into contact with
has your dog come in contact with any other dogs
if need be bring in the packaging of your dog's food
do you have carpeting?
track what your dog eats (treats and everything included)
does your dog go swimming?

Does anyone else have any ideas/suggestions?

It only takes one flea to do some mighty damage. LOL the lil suckers. Anyways I would try and see what the flea medicine does.
Also is your dog outside a lot .. running through the yards etc? Could even be fly bites. Which you should notice flies on him.
Does he play with other dogs? Could it be small puppy fights?
