I really only know the petstore's Petsmart, Petco, and Petland. Petsmart and Petco are okay and Petland I didn't like at all really. Are there any others that people recomend buying animals [rats in particular] at?

Petland i don't really know, PetsMart is all right, Petco I don't know much. If you have a Pet SuperMarket near you, that's a good one, you just have to check before going because they don't always have rats avalible.

Petstore animals are pretty much guaranteed to be sick, short lived, and unsocialized. Many people will tell you their pet store animals are fine, but the odds are very bad.
I would reccomend getting a rat from a [responsible] breeder or rescue.

There aren't any rat rescues in my area. But I found some rats at petsmart the other day who looked very healthy. Petco- not so healthy. Anways, tha for the help guys.

I do not reccomend buying ANY PET at a petstore. (adoptions are excluded from that) Try to locate a breeder or rescue if possible. Also www.petfinder.com

no shelters in my area have rats...i tried to find one

There were some on petfinder.com near Huston and another city. If those are not clost to you did you try posting at the rat board here? I know the gerbil board was very helpful in helping me find breeders and rescues in my area.
