Two employees of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals were arrested on animal cruelty charges in Ahoskie, N.C., after investigators saw dead dogs being thrown into a grocery store garbage container Wednesday, according to the Ahoskie Police Department.

Ahoskie police conducting surveillance as part of a monthlong investigation reported finding 18 dead dogs in the container and 13 animal carcasses in a van registered to PETA and seized by authorities.

The cats and dogs were taken Wednesday from animal shelters in Northampton and Bertie counties, police said. Animals had been collected every Wednesday for four weeks, and carcasses had been found dumped in Ahoskie every Wednesday for about a month, Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh said.

Two veterinarians said they were told that PETA would try to find homes for animals taken from their practices.

Adria J. Hinkle, 27, of the 1600 block of Claremont Ave. in Norfolk and Andrew B. Cook, 24, of the 500 block of Tree Top Drive in Virginia Beach were arrested on 31 felony counts of animal cruelty and eight misdemeanor counts of illegal disposal of dead animals.

Both posted $35,500 bail on Wednesday and have a first court date set for today in Winton.

PETA is investigating the incident. The organization has suspended Hinkle, who has worked for more than two years as one of its community animal project employees in North Carolina.

Cook, who was hired only weeks ago as her assistant, has not been suspended.

“We are appalled if this actually happened,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said. “We would absolutely never condone this behavior.”

Newkirk said of Hinkle: “She’s the Mother Teresa of animals. She’s a very kind, decent person.”

PETA says it routinely picks up animals at pounds to have them adopted or, if necessary, euthanized.

Shelter officials knew some of the animals, which are not always “cute, cuddly, housebroken or small,” would need to be put down, Newkirk said.

Among the dead animals, though, authorities found a female cat and her two “very adoptable” kittens taken from Ahoskie Animal Hospital, veterinarian Patrick Proctor said.

“These were just kittens we were trying to find homes for,” Proctor said. “PETA said they would do that, but these cats never made it out of the county.”

When Proctor evaluated one dead dog for police, he discovered a healthy, 6-month-old mutt with a needle mark on its front right leg, he said.

He also identified what he called a “death kit” that police found in the van. It was filled with syringes and two drugs that only licensed veterinarians can have, he said.

“PETA will never pick up another animal from my practice,” Proctor said.

PETA had taken 50 animals to be adopted from Proctor’s practice over the past two years, he said. PETA has also taken animals from veterinarian James Brown in Northampton County for about a year, Brown said.

“When they started taking them, they said they would try to find homes for them,” Brown said. “Nobody ever checked on them” after the animals were taken.

When PETA employees took animals from Brown’s practice in the past, they would tranquilize them and take them away in vans, said Karen Cole, the animal cruelty investigator for the Northampton Sheriff’s Office.

Some animals were very sick or injured and otherwise would have been euthanized in Brown’s clinic, she said.

“Some animals have to be euthanized,” she said. “But the way this crowd did it is sick.

Ok, I don't know that I'd go so far as to say this is proof of PETA wanting to end pet ownership, BUT... if these animals were sick/injured and would have been euthanized at the clinic, then why would they have sent them with PETA instead of just euthanizing them at the clinic?
And regardless of whether any of them had to be euthanized or not (which it doesn't really sound like they did) why would they just throw them in a dumpster?? If there was something wrong with any of them, to make them euthanize them, it would be a hazard to any other animal who happend to get into that dumpster looking for food. Plus, if you're a true animal lover, you don't just throw your animals away when they die, you bury them or have them cremated.

I posted this today too, LikeItOrNot! It happened in our state.

And Ravenrose, most of the vets and whatnot knew that SOME animals had to be euthanized, but they found a cat and it's kittens (healthy!) and a 6 month old puppy (also healthy!) in the pile.... I don't think they were doing it because they the animals were sick.

Some animals have to be euthanized cuz of overcrowding.

LOL I always knew I did not like PETA.. lets see how they get out of this.

PETA has stated they are against pet ownership. I have no doubt they did this because "they're better off dead then in slavery". Yes, slavery, thats what they believe pet ownership is. They're also for the banning of pit bulls.

If you can't tell, I loathe PETA.

see, I don't pay any attention to PETA news... or any news for that matter... so I have no idea what's been said by who. But the funny thing is, looking at the site that this article came from, there was another article that was "A Peak Inside the PETA Building" that specifically said something about the employees there taking their pets to work with them.

"Employees can bring their companion animals – you’ll be gently corrected if you call them “pets” – to work if they live too far away to care for them during the day.
Staff members can often be seen frolicking with their canines at the organization’s dog park along the river during breaks. Tiger, Ginger and Storm, among other cats, live at PETA and have free roam of the building through a system of flap doors cut into certain rooms, including the ladies bathroom."

So, if they have specifically said that they are against pet ownership, what's up with that?

Maybe not ALL of PETA is against keeping pets, but I do know that the founder, Ingrid Newkirk, is.

Also, if they're for keeping "companion animals" why would they go around to dog shows setting the dogs free? These aren't laboratories, they're well cared for show animals. Unfortunately it caused many dogs to get hit by cars and lost in the streets.

Remember the whole IAMS thing? They were complaining about the lack of care at IAMS laboratories, what they neglected to mention was the person in charge of caring for the animals was hired to go undercover for PETA.

*shakes head* I've always hated PETA. They pretend to help animals but do more harm then good.

This new news doesn't surprise me one bit.

Ok, first, I said I don't pay attention to that stuff, so I don't know what PETA does at dog shows or wherever else. One of the main reasons? They like to make things up.... I did happen to check their website after being on here earlier and I know positively that they're wrong on one of their informative little articles
Second, I never agreed or disagreed with anything said, I just pointed out the fact that that was in that article... I wasn't saying you were wrong, I just remembered seeing it when I looked up the article posted by Likeitornot.

Also, completely off topic, because I'm sure it wasn't their reason, but I know of multiple show dogs that are definitely not well cared for and are in fact abused and neglected.

I am glad somebody finally caught PETA red-handed, if you will. They like to show us the horrible pictures and worst cases, yet, they fail to tell you that most of the pictures they put out, are dramatized!

And another thing that cracks me up about them is: How many of us got a dozen or more pamphlets from PETA to donate money in the past year? Now, if they send something to me once, and wether I do, or do not send money (which i do not, i donate to the local shelters and the one i volunteer in) I obviously know PETA is out there. So why do they WASTE the money that other people DO send in, to pay for paper, ink and postage to repeatedly send me flyers begging for money???

You would think that they would keep track of this crap, and just send 1 a year, maybe 2 a year.... Not 2 or 3 mailings ever month or two!! I am soooo glad somebody is bringing them down. I want to know what they do that is soooo good for the animals? You cannot believe most of what they publish, or say! I was unsure about them in the past, so in the past few months, I did alot of research about them, and from what I have found.....I believe they have their own personal agenda!!

And, given PETA's reputation to mislead the public..why would those vets NOT check up on those animals?? Since when did PETA become a FREE Adoption agency for animals???

And Whoops has a point with animals being euthanized due to overcrowedment. We all know it, and it sucks @ss, but even the kill shelters do not put an animal down and throw it in a dumpster!!! The only kill shelter i know of is in Philadelphia, and they pile the animals as high as possible, and do a mass cremation of them all! But hell, thats a lot better then being tossed in dumpster!!

Thank goodness we have non-kill shelters here in Camden Coutny New Jersey...and as far as donations go, PETA will never see a dime from me. As long as our shelters out here are no kill, thats how long I will be here to help and support them! And when they eventually turn to kill shelters..as long as animal carcasses dont end up in the ShopRite dumpsters around the corner, i will still be there!!

I do have to agree, many people don't treat show dogs like they should. Just like many people abuse their pets. But the majority don't, they show because they love their breed and dogs.

I don't like the attitude that goes along with a lot of people who show dogs. Usually these dogs aren't allowed to act like dogs. They can't play with other dogs, they can't run around, they can't get dirty. God forbid they get the slightest scab or knick somewhere, get skunked, get something nasty on their fur, break a nail..

They seem to sit in a crate most of the day and only are allowed on short leash walks and tortured a lot with baths and grooming. Showers are almost always breeders on top of it and have too many dogs to give them each enough attention. The show dogs get locked safely away in a crate.

I must say however, that alot of people that show their dogs are not breeders per say! My boxer Autumn for instance, her mother is absolutely show quality, just no time nor enough money to put her in the ring. The litter autumn came from was sired by another show dog. A very well known show dog in the boxer breed! I know alot of breeders do also show their dogs..but you have to think about it this way... MOST litters, come from a dog that was studed out to a bitch!

All the people I know in the boxer club I am in, breed their bitches, once every year, sometimes every 2 years. There are actually waiting lists that lots of people are on to get a dog!

And when you watch dog shows, you hear the dog announced, Handled by Joe Shmoe! Most of the owners, do not handle their own dogs. They have their dog trainers do it for them. And usually, from what I have seen....the dog trainers work one on one with a perticular dog very very frequently! So the dog is NOT caged up all the time. But the people I know that show their dogs, do have trainers come in, but also spend plenty of time with their dogs!

I'm not saying that this does not happen, but most people that show and breed, are trying to BETTER the quality of that specific breed...they are not trying to make a quick buck!

I do not totally disagree with everything some of you are saying, but I'm with Whoops on this topic. There are more people out there that show their dogs and treat them like kings and queens then there are not! I know quite a few of them, and they are great people and love their dogs just as much as we love ours!

PETA is for Breed specific legislation that alone bother me. The fact that they stand up for animals rights except for Pitbulls and Bully Breeds, which is bull crap. Other than like said before, PETA doesnt want anyone to own any animals. In my opinion PETA has done more harm than good. And i'm glad that someone has caught them to show everyone what most of us already knew
