I was just wondering, if you can just leave the baby tiels in the nest witht he mother, and let her care for them, or do the need special care from me?

Hi!

The best thing to do is let the parents raise their young on their own. Handfeeding is something i do NOT recommend, especially not for cockatiels.

Once they have opened their eyes and started to grow some feathers, i pick them upp, talk, play and just handle them every day. (no feeding involved.)
This way they grow up into TAME, well-adjusted birds, that knows proper "birdy behaviour", without the negative effects (wich are many) from handfeeding.
You should check the chicks regulary, see if they are feeding, and just to check up in how they are doing. (Try not to pick them up when they are really small, and always make shure your hands are "warm" (not cold, at least) and clean.

Good luck, and take care!

Ok. I do not currently have baby cockatiels, but someday, I may breed mine. Just maybe, but I have been reading so many articles about how their are too many birds in shelters, and before I bred them, I would get a list of people that would agree to take one. Yesterday, I visited www.borntodiepets.com and I started crying. It was so sad. Now I have second thoughts on the whole thing. Maybe though...thanks for the advice though!

Really great of you to look up stuff before breeding. The last thing we need, wich contribiute to this overpopulation, as people that has a male and thinks "It would be fun with some babies."
When one IS going to breed, only the fittest, "best" birds with the best geenes should be allowed to breed.

You have my applause for locking this up before! :)

Lol, thanks. I am going to try to get a lutino and a grey to breed. I'm not sure though, because I don't know if it would make some lutinos and some greys, or like grey lutinos...I'll figure it out someday...lol.

Hi!
It's a bit tricky, with cockatiel genetics.
It depends on what kind of splits (if they have any) they are, etc etc.
There is a great site on genetics. I've forgotten the adress, but i'll look it up and send it to you. :)

Take care
