Hey Everyone. My doggie is between 12 and 15. We got him from a shelter and he was abandoned so they didnt know for sure how old he was. But lately he has been getting in the trash...going to the bathroom in the house...not eating as much... seeming going deaf...and getting tumar like bumps on him. I know some of the affects are just because he is an older dog. But it looks like he is begining to go blind? His eyes are slightly getting cloudy. But what we're are afraid of is him going totaly deaf and blind. Waht would we do? We would HATE to put him to sleep...but would he go through pain and would he be able to have a good rest of his life? Please relpy on what you would do in this situation. Thanks

By The Way...he has seen a vet about the tumors. ( we were afraid they consisted of cancer) and he said he should be okay.

Don't worry about your dog going blind and deaf. My old dog Bullet was blind and deaf for years before he had to be put down after he suffered a bad stroke. We just carried him up and down stairs and lifted him onto and off of the bed and couch. You're just going to have to help out your dog a little more instead of expecting him to do everything for himself.

Yes, I agree you can live with a dog that is blind and deaf but obviously extra precautions have to be taken such as make sure no doors are left open (whether outside or down to the basement), never moving furniture, going out with him on a leash outside etc.

However there are meds that can help a dog with "senility " and I would be concerned that he is not eating as much. I think some bloodwork at the vets might be in order if none were done in the last 6 months.

depending on what the condition of the eye is that you are speaking of (glaucoma? cataracts?) if treated now before it progresses further your dog maybe able to retain some eyesight. however you would need to seek a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis.

if your dog does go blind and deaf they make training devices for dogs with those imparements.

My past dog had very cloudy eyes but she could see great. I tossed treats to her daily and she snatched them out of the air. Even the vet said other then the cloud they were fine.

You can do blood work (CBC) to check the organ, internal and blood of your pooch. This will help now becuase it would catch something early if something is going wrong. Giving you a better chance to treat it and less expensive the earlier it's caught.

Deaf and blind are natural occurances. You need not worry. As the other said just take the precautions.

Your dog may be feeling stressed or feeling your stress which is causing her to act out. Try to relax and enjoy her. :)

my dog also has bumps, if your dog is a bit over weight they could just be fatty tumors, my dog has about 3 they do no harm to her, if she loses weight they go down if she gains weight they get bigger, so that is what the bumps could be.
