I've noticed that my hammies nails are super long, I have trimmed them down before with my ferrets nail clippers but their nails grow back in like a week and they hate getting their nails cut... does anyone else cut/trim their hammies nails at all??? Should I even be doing it???

I just give my hamsters a piece of sandpaper in their cage, and they scratch at it therefore I never need to trim their nails.

Adhede some sandpaper to your hammy's wheel all the way around the inside. Leave it in there for about a week and their nails will be trim.

I have to agree with the PP's about the sandpaper.
I use Birdcage sandsheet liners...
Put them in the cage for a few days every fortnight/3 weeks and bobs your dads brother... short nails.... :p

Not 'entirely' sure about the sandpaper in the wheel trick tho.. seems a little harsh?

In the bottom of the cage, they just get filed at 'regular' speed.

It wont scratch their paws if you use fine grain.

Are you sure they are long enough that they even need cutting? I would leave them be unless you see that they are starting to curl under.

I wouldn't put sandpaper on their wheels. You can take a ladder (if they have one in their cage, if not, a bird ladder will do) and weave sandpaper through that. Or, put a rock near the water bottle, and raise the water bottle enough that they will need to climb on the rock to take a drink. Climbing on the rock will wear the nails down. If you do that though, make sure they figure it out and can get their water. ;)

I have a dwarf hamster and her nails grew like crazy...(i wasnt even expecting it!) and they started to curl under. i put sandpaper in her ball and let her run around for a while but it didnt seem to do anything. so then i put sandpaper in a box and let her run around in that and scratch at the sides of the box and that still didnt do anything. I read on some website that if your hamsters nails curl under, it will hurt the hamster if you or the vet cuts them. is this true!?!? because the sandpaper thing doesnt seem to be working!

please let me know!

I used the sand paper on my old (Kiba) hamsters wheel and I think that it wore them down a little bit.
