View Full Version : Pregnant? and smells like shes into heat?

I suspect my daughters hammie could be pregnant.
(have previously posted about this...)

I know she has been with a male hammie, so I realise this is a definate possibility, but also realise that first time isn't always the charm.

This was 12 days ago I think... and although she appears a little bigger... I think that may just be me imagining it!
Should she not be huge yet?

Yesterday, I noticed shes smelling all musky and I'm assuming shes coming into heat.
Logically, she cant be in heat if she's pregnant?

So (getting to the point finally - sorry!!) my question really is..
If a hamster is pregnant, do they still smell?
I thought I would try to 'test' her (not with the male!) and she has never frozen.

If she is with pup, I'm pretty sure they will be due on friday, so I will prepare just incase anyway... but what are the odds that she's not infact pregnant?

Will try to attached photos,do you think she looks pregnant? (she would be 11 days gestation in these pictures)

If she is pregnant I hope you will care for the babies.

No, I have never heard of a pregnant hamster smelling musky as if in heat. But I am not sure if it is possible. I have dealt with two Syrians who were accidentally pregnant (long stories I posted about long ago) and never smelled that.

No, being with a male does not mean the female is pregnant; they may not have "done it".

At 12 days she might not be "huge". Mice get huge; Syrians not so much. The best indicator if if she started building a big nest yet. Be sure there is lots of ripped up clean tissue arround for that. Swollen nipples is another sign.

Also, clean the habitat now or within days, as if babies come you cannot disturb the habitat for two weeks.

Good luck. And have a camera ready just in case!

Hey zouave...

Thanks so much for your reply.

Of course the babies will be looked after...
I have 2 extra cages at the moment.... (so I will be able to seperate boys from girls...) and if she DOES deliver... I have several more cages available if necessary, to seperate any troublemakers there may be from the litter.
I now have 10 people who would love a new fur-member of their family (although I accept that some may backout)
(see, all prepared! ;) )

I know the hamsters 'did it' as you put it, as I caught them in the act. Hopefully, I disturbed them in time, but I accept that they are fertile little critters! :p

I have been preparing as though she is pregnant just incase, high protein diet, lots of bedding, and so on....

she does have a nest built.. but I'm not entirely sure thats anything different from the norm...

Thats the problem..... I cant decide if her behaviour is really any different!! How silly does that make me sound?!
Shes not agressive, which many people say is a sign... but then, she never was before...

I guess its just going to have to be a 'wait and see' kinda thing... but was hoping that maybe someones insight would give me a bit of an idea which way this was going to go..

That is a syrian hamster, when the hamsters reach 8 weeks you will need to seperate them ALL not just by sex or they can fight to the death. They are not social and should not share a cage once they grow past the pups stage. I really hope you have a small litter if she is pregnant as if she has 20 that would be a whole lot of cages to clean if you can't find homes for them and they all survived.

Hi Artagiel,

Yes, I am aware that they are Syrian hamsters..perhaps I should have made it clearer...?

I posted a week or so ago about it.

We have 2 syrians.. bought as both boys..firstly because boys dont tend to smell so much, and secondly, same sex hamsters could never breed! (how ironic!)

I have no intention to breed any animals, I prefer to purchase, or rescue my pets.

They are kept seperately. In large modular habitats, at either ends of a large room.

Why is it that there are some people on these forums who are not able to just answer a question?

I KNOW how to keep hamsters....
I KNOW there is a good chance this is going to get expensive.
How many times do I have to say that this was an UNINTENTIONAL breeding? Please stop judging me.
If I ask a question, it is not so you can point fingers at the silly woman who may have a pregnant hamster on her hands.. its to broaden my knowledge, so I may care for these little animals a little better.
I am not a silly child with nothing better to do than put my hamstes together just because I'm bored!

I'm sorry if this seems a little harsh, but I just fail to see the point of these forums if people are reaching out for help, only to get lectured

Hmmm, she looks pregnant to me. My female always had a smell even when not in heat, so its possible. Especially if she's not freezing. Syrians may not get large as a rule, but Smudge sure did.

Poor Smudge got lumpy as well, but most syrians don't get quite as big as her.

I am sorry I wasn't trying to lecture or judge and I did not mean for it to come across that way. I assumed since you were concerned that the hamster was pregnant that they were somehow together and I was worried that you were misled by more than the sex of your little fuzzy ones (as in that it would be ok to keep them together.) Please keep in mind I have no way of knowing what you know about hamsters, I meant no offense I was only trying to help. I won't do it again.

Geez. :boggled:

how long did you say it had been since she was in with the male?

hamsters are fuller around anyway. she didn't really look fat in that pictrure.

Syrians usually have the appearance of being chubby, but they shouldn't be THAT chubby! None of mine balloon out on the sides like that, they're almost completely straight. If she's not pregnant I'd say she's getting too many sunflower seeds. ;)

Smudge had 12 babies.

This is what a "normal" fit non pregnant hamster should look like (I believe anyway). Notice her straight sides.

And smudge about a week pregnant, I found this pic and realized how much she resembles your hamster in size.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread. But I would definately say she's gonna have some little ones.

Chaos, thanks for your input, you're not hijacking at all, its really appreciated.

Artagiel,
Sorry if I was harsh, I do now appreciate that you had no real way of knowing my knowledge on hammies, I guess I was a bit defensive as in the short period I have been a member of these boards, I have probably recieved as many, if not, more lectures, than just answers/advice I requested in good faith.
I guess I snapped at you out of exhasperation. you are right, you did not really deserve that, and so, I appologise. I hope you will accept.

No news on cupid today, although she 'froze' yesterday as I was petting her, so I am assuming that we 'may' have dodged the bullet ;)

All prepared just incase tho... if she IS preggers, she will be due friday or saturday (i think)
Time will tell, and I will keep you all posted :)

Thanks again!
