Eddie has two one hour runs each day in the woods or on the beach. You can view him in Gallery 7.He is a real darling of a dog, but sometimes when we are making for home, he decides that he has not had his "full wack" and takes a bit extra by running off bolting along other woodland paths. He's only away for a few minutes and always returns when he is satisfied. He is so pleased with himself, but it is jolly inconvenient and quite disturbing sometimes. How can I manage to get over this problem anyone any ideas? He knows the woods very well by the way so he is not technically "lost". He is only a year old and I'm afraid he may be taken off by strangers who THINK he IS lost

Well, the only thing I can think of is, when he returns to you when called, give him a treat and tell him he is a good boy. That may help!
Good luck!

Put an ID tag on him with your address? Or just plain "I'm not lost, so let me down and i'll trot on home. Thank you"

Putting an ID tag is good, but what i am worried is, the finder might not even return Eddie to you.
I think Brandy's suggestion is good. Treats will do the trick. Give Eddie his favourite treat/snacks. Having Eddie running back to you, is much better than having a stranger bringing him back to you.

Thank you for your replies and your suggestions are very good. I do, however, always welcome him back with praise and treats, but oh boy! has he been just as bad today!! Do you think that I do not give him enough excercise? I know one thing, he certainly leads me a merry dance sometimes, but always comes back-eventually, when he's had enough. Who is excercising whom here?

Here's a thought since you are worried of someone taking him before he returns too u, depending on how 'deep' into the woods he goes, you could use a whistle, whether he responds to it or not, at least someone would be less interested in taking him if they hear u whistling for him... just a suggestion.

Many thanks Bunni for your good suggestion. I shall certainly have a go.
His main aim in shooting off I think is to hunt squirrels, but I worry if he should become trapped or stuck somewhereand I can@t find him. Mind you, so far, he has always come back. Yesterday he was missing for half an hour but returned home. I found him sitting on the doorstop as bold as brass!!!

Hello!
Suzielaw, i think you shouldn't even worry.
To know that Eddie actually returned home after half an hour by himself, you have an intelligent dog there!!! http://petshub.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks for the compliment, yes, he IS very smart. It would be wonderful to know what he's thinking of sometimes, though I doubt Eddie would agree.

A bolting dog should always be run away from, call as you go, he should be enough of a wuss to think.....oh god, shes leaving me...alone.......in the woods http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif
