What does everyone here think of mustangs? Does anyone here own one? I was just wondering because I own one. What kinds of breeds does everyone have?

Hello Haley

I have never had a mustang but I know a few people who adopted them and they are truly wonderful.

They do take some time and you really have to have patience but they are smart and loving.

I have 2 Arabians . They are 32 and 23 and I bred them both.
I also recently adopted a 10 yr old TB who is a cryptiod. ( undecended testicles ).
He is very sweet and we hope to get him gelded in the spring.

In my years with horses I have also owned Saddlebreds, Apps, QH, shetland ponies, morgans and morabs. I have loved all of them for their unique qualities and although I prefer Arabs I never turn a horse down because of it's breed.

Mustangs do make wonderful companions. I adopted on May 11, 2001. I even remember his aution number(4830). I have an Arabian to. They are such wonderful, understanding, and sweet horses. When my sister get on my arab he is like and old plow horse that just got out of the feild because he knows she doesn't like to go fast and likes calm horses. When I get on him he is like a bull in the China shop because he knows that I like fast spirited horses.
Hope to hear from you soon

Hey Jacksondog,
I'm sorry to hear about your mare. What happened to her? I had a standerbred mare that was unrideable. She had split her hoof and it never healed. She was an ex-trotter. I love mustangs. I had mine broke and outside the pen within two weeks. Of course at the auction he was "licking and chewing" when I was petting him. I was the only one able to pet him at the auction. I just bonded with him so he was the one I knew I wanted. When I went to look at the other horses for sale he went to the far side of the pen where no one could pet him. And he stayed there till I got back. Such a sweety, don't yah think? Did you adopt your mustang?
Hope to hear from you soon

no you didn't ask me where i was from. i am from california. the county i live in is San Luis Obispo. i think if we really tried my mare could heel but i just don't have enough time and my 2nd cousin is in college and has her own horses to take of. I have also lived in Wyoming. but i was only there for 3 years then i moved to ca. i miss wy.:bawling:

I would love to live in Wyoming. What was it like? I'm sorry you had to move. I don't think I could ever move from my farm. It's just to nice and big. Perfect for horses.lol
Hey, since you live in Ca, do you know Monty Roberts? He's a famous horse trainer that invented the join-up method. He also was the first to learn the language of Equus.
Hope to hear from you soon!!

I'm so jealous of you lot that have places to keep horses.

The nearest Yard to me (some drive away) wants £500 per week for DIY livery and £700 per WEEK for Part livery!
Thats around $1000 to $14000 per week. :bawling:
sometimes it sucks living in the UK.

i wish i could remember what it was like in wy. i can only remember a few things. when i grow up i want to move back there and my a ranch. we didn't have ranch when i lived there but we lived near one and i would always look at their horses. Monty Roberts sounds really familiar. in heartland books that i read are about horses and have the joining up in them but it is not by Monty. sorry:bawling: pyscofalcon that is a lot of money:agree: i can't believe it is that much

It is - 1 reason why I want to move to Wales or up North. When I lived up North it only cost £5 ($10) a week to keep him.

Hey,
I want to move out to WY too. I hope to qualify for a rodeo(NHSFR) and I think that the year I am going to try and qualify for is 2005 and I think that is in WY. I have read some of the heartland books and they do use the join up method. This method of join up was all started by Monty Roberts. I hope you do get to go back to WY some day and have your ranch. I either want to live in Colorado or Wyoming, but the ground out there is really expensive everyone says.

I hate Rodeos - they make me sick.

I think Bronco riding and calf roping is cruel.

Love the barrel reacing tho.

Rodeo isn't cruel. Think way back when the calves had to be roped and the still do. They don't use the same calf everytime. Also calves have the build for being roped, horses don't. Calves and horses are built very differently.
Bronc riding isn't cruel. Either is bull riding. I actually want to bull ride and I would never do anything that would hurt and animal. I would NEVER make an animal suffer. I just would never be able to do that.
I love the barrel racing too. It fun as well as challanging.

Bronc horses are some of the best treated horses in any type of horse sporting industry, as are rodeo bulls. They can be worth millions of dollars and are treated as such. The owners make sure that every precaution is taken for the horses.
They take the horses that dont look good enough to be in the show ring, that love to buck and turn it into a playtime for them.
Some bucking broncs are bred to buck!

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association takes the welfare of all animals used in PRCA sanctioned events seriously, and the bucking horses are no exception.

Many questions often arise about the equipment used on bucking horses. Riders in both the saddle bronc and bareback riding use spurs while riding. All spurs used in these events must be dulled and the rowels (the wheel-type devices on the end of the spur) must be able to roll along the animal’s thick hide; no locked rowels are allowed. Riders are disqualified if their spurs are too sharp of if the animal is injured in any way due to the rider’s actions.

The flank strap is used in bucking events to encourage a bucking horse to kick higher. The flank strap must be lined by fleece or neoprene and placed loosely around the flank area of the horse, just in front of the back legs. To pull a flank strap tightly would restrict or stop the motion of the animals, quite the opposite of what is asked of rodeo bucking horses. Horse flank straps are equipped with a quick release mechanism that allows the rodeo pickup men to release the strap when the ride concludes. Veterinarians familiar with rodeo events and equipment have testified that the flank strap does not injure or cause pain to the animal.

Overall, the animal welfare program employed by the PRCA is extensive. More than 60 rules are in place to govern the care and handling of livestock at PRCA rodeos. Professional judges enforce these rules and inspect all livestock before a competition; if any animal is not healthy and fit, that animal will not compete. PRCA rules also require a veterinarian on-site. These on-site, independent veterinarians are allowed by PRCA to conduct surveys to calculate the percentage of the rate of injury to livestock competing at PRCA rodeos. The latest survey was conducted at 57 rodeos during the 2000 PRCA rodeo season. Out of 71,743 animal exposures, 38 injuries occurred. This calculates to a rate of injury of .00052, or five-hundredths of one percent.

As the sport of rodeo continues to grow in popularity, the care of the livestock involved will be under greater scrutiny. The PRCA and other rodeo associations will continue to make the welfare of all rodeo livestock an important part of the rodeo industry.

I went to a BLM Wild horse and burro adoption before. I was about to get a nice big paliminio stud, but somebody adopted it was I was gone to get something to eat.... I didn't see any other horses there that I liked, so I went home. I have 5 Arabians, 1 appy mare, and 1 paint. I forgot to mention to everybody that I got a new horse! She's a paint, and she is almost two years old! She is a tri color paint. Very pretty and has the sweetest temperment! Wish me luck witrh breaking her in at 3 years old!
