I talked to the breeder and found out what i needed to know about caring for he, but i was wodering if anyone here had ever had one, so i could get soe other ideas about what they like, other people's experiance with the or any other helpfull info.
THANKS!

Hey! thanks for replying.
That is a picture of an opossum, just not the kind I have as a pet, those are pretty common in the wild around here. Mine is called a short-tailed opossum. They are from south america...I think...well they are not from around here at least :D
Short-tail opossums are much smaller, their body being about 5 inches and about a 3 inch tail. They have brown fur and are very soft! They have the very simler facial features and body structure though as the one you have a picture of their, although they are REALLY cute too!
I would post a picture but....I'm not sure how...so if you want to see a picture of one, i would just suggest typing short-tailed opossum in the seach thing and you should easly be able to find a good picture of one. They are REALLY CUTE!!!! At least I think so!
Have a great day and agan thanks for your message!

wow....an american opposum as a pet...those things r scary, here (not the furry short tail oppossum, imm talking about the big american oppossum). Here in jerey we try to keep them OUT of our houses. lol. i used to live in an aprtment and they used to come into the buildings basements and sleep there. Man were they mean. They had big teeth too. Now that i live in a huge house in the residental/woods parts of new jersey, the thougt of having them in my basement totally freaks me out. their tails are HUGE. and they play dead really well too . lol

well possums are not mean at all...they will show their teeth but it is a scare tactic. They also his and drool when scared. But I have never been bit by one and I have handled plenty!! actually they make great pets as long as you have the time for them and enough space

I have an STO, and I am a brand new member. I got him last week, and he looks like the pic (with the link) except Milo (lo~lo) has a black tail!
Does yours have a white thingy in his ears? It looks like wax...Mine does, but hes super sensitive with his ears.

Does anyone with a STO have an e-mail addy or Instant messeger screen name that would like to give me some info about them? I don't check this forum very often. I've been researching them for awhile. Also, does anyone know of a breeder in upstate NY?

Glidergirl,
STO's are apparently really easy to keep. They eat ferret food supplemented with mealworms, banana, apple and baby food. They can live in a tank, but must live alone, because they are very territorial.
A good source of information is:
STO SITE (http://www.opossums.ws/)
Dr. Poran (from the site) also has a book on them and special food that she has formulated for them.
I have held them several times at a petstore, and they are really sweet and just adorable. They like to climb and run in wheels.

i would really like to know what you are smoking to see possums in brantford! first off-they are illegal to be kept in ontario alone let alone brantford. perhaps what you are seeing in brantford are ferrets or sugar gliders (not sure how they can be confused but oh well). THERE ARE NO OPPOSSUMS IN BRANTFORD.

I'm looking into getting a STO. I read that one petstore in New Jersey may have them, but they might be closed down and there was no phone number. So I was wondering, does anyone know where I can get one. It has to be in New Jersey. My paretns won't let me sent away for one.

I've got to ask: why does 'Opossum' have an 'O'?
Of course, in several part of America they spell it without, I believe.
