View Full Version : Why did you name your dog what you did?

My sole purpose in naming my dogs was based on a physical characteristic or trait. Sweetie, our first Sheltie/mix, was named that because from the time she was a pup, she was the sweetest dog in the world and has stayed that way for 16 years.
Our second Sheltie/mix, Skateboard was given that name because of all 6 pups in Sweeties litter, Skateboard loved to get pushed around on my youngest sons skateboard. He'd load up all six, and start pushing. One would jump off and she would take it's place in the line. Another would jump off and she continued to move forward. Finally, as the only one left, she was up front on the board 'hanging eight'. LOL
When he was alive, our Dalmatian was named Snoopy. We gave him that name because he used to stick his nose (literally) into anything he was interested in. He snooped into places he didn't belong ALL THE TIME. LOL Besides the obvious embarrassing reference of getting goosed by my best bud, Snoop had his head stuck in a bucket, his nose pinched by a spring loaded cupboard door, and a couple of good scratches when he decided to get a little too fresh with the neighbors cat.
Snowball, our Lab/mix pup, was named that because when my oldest son first brought her home, she was just this all white pup balled up in my son's hands. Had I known how big she was gonna get, I would have named her Avalanche.
So how about everyone else? What prompted you to give your dogs the names they've got? Please share. :-)

Oh, yes....Brown made the connection that all my dogs names begin with 'S'. :-) This is by design. When you make an 's' sound, you put your teeth close together and blow air through your teeth. Kinda like whistling, right? I was told a looooong time ago that the 's' sound can be heard by a dog and recognized faster than any other sound because of it's pitch. Their ears perk up at the 's' sound. Just thought I'd share. :-)

Hi Dave,
I enjoy reading your post very much.
Snowball look very active and friendly. I guess she is the one who will greet you in the morning with the wagging of her tail? My dog do that to me and he seems to do the wagging to only his perfered members of the family. Which are those whom give him more food and tibits. http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif
Grand Sweetie look like so majestic and wise. Guess she must has seen and gone through a lot.
Is Sweetie motherly to Skateboard? She look so wise too. Can't really tell that her father is a German Shepherd. How is the Shepherd now? Do you have a photo of him too?
Sorry to hear the passing of your Dalmatian due to kidney failure. I have a chihuahua and he is named Snoopy too. He is two years old. We named him Snoopy cos he has complete white coat.
Snoopy is the prince of the family. My parents sometimes calls home not to ask about me but to ask about Snoopy. He sleeps with my parents in their room with his own little bed, blanket and a small carpet.
Ask you something Dave. Do your dogs sleep on their back with all their four legs wide open and up in the air? Snoopy always does that and i still can't help laughing whenever i see him doing it.
I think i am diverting from the topic of your post. So glad to hear abt the benefits of dogs names that begin with 'S'. Personally, i think it's better to have a easy to call name and the name should ends with a high pitch. For example, Snoopy ends with 'py' which you must end with a higher pitch. No scientific basis for that, just my perference.
Did you use the Pets Names Generator on this website at http://petshub.com/names/ ? i find it quite useful to name my future pets.
Chat with you soon.

Hello Heinz,
I never know about the purpose of the letter 'S' in names for pets. My dog is named Brownie. Simply, because he is brown is color and my family thinks that this names suits him well. He has got several tones of brown on his body and is rather cute.
I am so sorry to learn about your Snoopy. I am sure that your Snoopy is very happy now and is no longer in pain.
Oh yes, i seen your Sweetie and she is really beautiful and wise. I read one of your message that Snowball is bigger then Sweetie and Skateboard?? WOW! I think Snowball is really big in size then, but small in age. http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif
Byron, my dog also lies down with his fours in the air. It is quite hilarious to see him in that manner. Do your dogs sleep that way too, Heinz? Do your dogs sleep with you?
I am impressed that your dog has his own bed, blanket and a carpet of his own. I think he must have really enjoy himself.
Brownie sleeps with me and i am so attached to him and he is to me. I can't really get to sleep without him beside me. Toss and turn throughtout the night. http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif
Alright, hear from you soon.

Sweetie is very smart if I do say so myself. :-) Actually, when she was a pup, she was extremely easy to train the basics. In addition to my voice commands, I used hand signals with them. Shelties are herding dogs, after all. About a year ago, when we found out she had lost 90 percent of her hearing in both ears, it had been a very long time since I used the hand signals. If her back was turned to me, I had to either stomp on the floor or hit the coffee table so she could feel the vibration. I started doing the hand signals, and she had never forgotten them. If I whisper low in her ear she hears me.
Sweetie and Skateboard's relationship is more of a best friends type of thing. I'm sure Skateboard realizes Sweetie is her birth mother, but there's no contention between the two of them. Skateboards black and tan colors are almost identical to the German Shepherd. Even her tail looks more GSD-like than a big, bushy tail like Sweetie or a full bred Sheltie. The German Shepherd lived down the block and you might call what happened a one night stand. My youngest son was walking Sweetie when the German Shepherd (also on a leash) had the 'urge'. LOL
All my dogs will sleep on their bags with their legs in the air, every now and then. Not exactly the way a 'lady' is supposed to sleep, but then again.....they're dogs! LOL
Snowball is the only one that sleeps with me on my bed. Firstly, because she sheds very little. Secondly, that way she leaves the other two dogs alone in the middle of the night so they can sleep. LOL Because Snowball is a Labrador Retriever mixed with Beagle, and since she's a female, she is smaller than a normal Lab. I'd say in about another 6 months she'll top out in size. Probably around 80 pounds maximum and a little taller. Full bred Shelties don't weigh more than around 20 pounds normally, and with Sweetie and Skateboards mixes, they're a little bigger than that, but not much.
Sweetie and Skateboard make strangers into friends very quickly. Snowball is still leery of strangers and will bark, but she'll run away from them and stop next to me. LOL Once she is familiar with them, then you can't keep her away. :-)

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. I have a black tiny toy poodle named "Halo" because our last name is Angell, pronounced Angel. She weighs 3 lb. 8 oz. and is the love of our lives, my hubby and I. If my signature comes through on this post, it is not a very good likeness. (It's not her) I have been searching the net for a better picture, but have been unable to find one. I don't have the means to use a real photo of her for my sig. Anyway, looking forward to visiting you, probably daily. It's cold here now, so I will be spending more time at the keyboard. What little I have seen so far in this forum, I like very much. Talk to you all later,

I am a HUGE hockey fan but didn't want my pit/rotty mix to be named Puck so I named him after an Ottawa Senator hockey player Radek Bonk. Fedorov sounded funny while discipling.

The dogs I grew up with (four beautiful rots) were given German names. - Three males - Fabian, Fantom, Flöhchen
and the female - Sternchen. I've always loved the German language.

Our dog got named "Clover". It was my boyfriend and I's first pet together, and our "thing" was clovers. She was also our fourth family member, and was incredibly lucky (she arrived at the shelter literally 10 minutes before we did), so she's our 4 leaf Clover. :)

When we got Pepe, we were told her name was Baby.. but she didn't respond to it at all.. she was a tinly little hairless pomeranian who just claimed everyone's attention.. so we renamed her Pepe (after the Muppet character Pepe, the King Prawn) cuz she was small, but has an ego the size of an elephant (we also decided that if we had the room, we'd have to get a big dog and name it Seymor to go with her... but havne't, so far..)
Rocky we also got as an adult. He was more attached to his name though, so we left it as was... (though added the need for a big dog named Bullwinkle to the list...)

lol. This thread is 5yrs old.
My dog started with the name JJ. I so wasn't prepared when I got him. I had about 3 days to pick out a name. I figured I'd know it when I saw him. All I knew was that I wanted it to start with a J. So J became JJ.
If anyone watches General Hospital. One of the characters, Carly.. kept calling a guy Jason "jase". And she said it like 6 times during a conversation with him "Jase this, Jase that"
I liked the sound of Jase and JJ became Jase like a year later.
lol although I don't really think it fits him. I just like the name.

Rusty, my Lhasa Apso was named after his hair color.
Bear, my Lhasa x Spaniel cross was named because when we got her we thought she was a pure breed Lhasa and would look like a little teddy bear since she's all black. Partly the name was decided on was because everyone said she was a male except for me who positive she was a girl but I was only 13 at the time so no one believed me. A few days later she was taken to the vets for her first check up and yep she was female. I've since taught her the nickname 'Princess'.

lol, it was really annoying at the time. We'd had Rusty for 6 months by that point so I picked him up to show them the difference between him and Bear. They still didn't believe me because my uncle, the "dog expert", swore she was a male.

I have had something similar happen to me. I was giving a litter of puppies their health examination at the shelter. I was in a bit of a rush as they were going into foster care, so I didn't check as closely as I should've...
All of the dogs appeared to be females. There was one really beautiful SibeX, with blue eyes and red hair (Sibe/Duck Tolling Retreiver X). I felt sad that this dog was otherwise healthy, but had a large umbilical hernia, and most people do not want the cost that is connected with fixing it (although we kept telling people that it could be done at the time of her spay)
Needless to say, after the puppies came back from foster care and the dogs had been in the shelter for awhile- I decided to recheck my findings as people were asking me if I was sure that the pup WAS a female.
It wasn't- and a name change was in order! It was very embarrassing, but I did learn to take my time and recheck everything!!

Before I start, yes, all my animals have middle names! :p
Let's see, the oldest one is Angel Rose... don't know where the Rose came from, it just sounded good, but I wanted to be able to call her my little Angel and have it actually be her name.
Then there's Brenna Bear who is solid black and Brenna means "little Raven" (or "raven-haired", depending on where you look...) And Bear because she looked like a bear cub when she was a puppy.
Then Charisma Jade who is called Carma. In the name book that I have Charisma says "rare quality that attracts attention" She has eyes the color of light green Jade and they were the first thing that attracted me to her. Carma because she was at Petsmart when I decided I wanted her, but someone else adopted her before me. They couldn't keep her though and I ended up with her.
Then Nadia Tessa... again, in the name book that I have, Nadia means hope and Tessa means 4th. She's the 4th and the way I got her was that she was dumped in a box in front of my work, so I thought hope was good... hope for a new life for her. Plus hope that I was going to be able to keep her.... she absolutely hates my dogs!

Natalie (australian shepherd/redbone coonhound x) was named after the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks. I was going to name her Dixie (not after the Dixie Chicks though) and a friend suggested Natalie which I liked.
I did'nt pick Sebastian's (toy poodle) name but I knew his previous owners well and he was named after Sebastian the flying dog in the movie "The Never Ending Story".

My dog's name is Kingsford. We named him that because he is black and we were orginally going to name his "Carcoal", but my dad siad, "Why don't we call him Kingsford, after the charcoal brand?" He was thus called "Kingsford, King of Charcoal", but we just call him King for short.

Well...
Harrison was named after the street we got him on.
Bradley was named after BRAD in my moms favorite movie "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"
Elliot was named after my brothers middle name
Dagget was named after the beaver in the cartooon " The Angry Beavers" because she looks just like him
Cartmen was named after the south park character because he acts similiar.
Charlotte was named after my sisters favorite band, Good Charlotte.
Peanut was named for a reason unknown to me.
Jannah was named after our two dachshunds who died, JANET and HANNAH.
bjorn was named after the swedish name for Bear because thats what he looks like
Reece was named REECE-SUSITATE because she was smothered by her mom, and we had to resusitate her.
Bob: When he got parvo and had to be taken to the vet, they said we had to name him. We had to plans on keeping him, so we just said BOB. He spent 8 days in the hospital being called BOB so it kind of just stuck.

Punky, I find it strange (and unfair) for the poor Goldfish! One goldfish amidst 25 cats! Hahaha! And the mice, too....
Anyway...
Archie was named after Archibald on "Monarch of the Glen", a Scottish TV show on the ABC. He has black hair as does our little guy, he's a Maltese/Poodle mix and he has a kind of "toupee"!
Arwen was named after Arwen on the "Lord of the Rings". She's a Papillion and mixed colours, and she's even prettier than Liv Tyler. :)

there's this band called jaya the cat, that my boyfriend and i listened to all the time when we got my cattle dog, who was severely overweight. so she became "jaya the fat".
isces is different spelling on "isis" who i know is some sort of goddess. but i was just throwing around names with my mom about my new puppy, and seeing as she has ice blue eyes, i wanted to incorporate that into her name somehow. my mom just said "what about isis?" and i loved it. but i'm dyslexic and i really hated the way it was spelled, so i made it easier for me to write.
bronson came with his name from the shelter, and we were originally going to change it but then i thought of charles bronson, the guy who does the death-wish films, and decided to keep it. he looks like a bronson anyway.

Just an FYI, Isis is an egyptian goddess, Osiris' wife. You could compare them to Zues and Hera from greek mythology. She is the goddess of magic. I was thinking of naming my Maltese that name....I LOVE mythology.

We were on our way home from collecting Charlie from the breeder and she keptjumping about and falling over so I said "you're a right old Charlie" a saying my dad used to come out with loads when I was a child and it stuck. Most people assume she is a he cos Charlie but we like it and it kinda suits her face. Charlie can be short for Charlotte so I don't care.
