Hello,

My dog sometimes chew, bite and lick his hing legs/paws. What is happening? I try to look hard into his paws, but i don't see any mites or lices. Is it a habit? It is a sign of bacteria/fungus? How can i prevent him from chewing/biting/licking his hind paws?

Please help.

Hard to tell what's happening without more information. Is this constant to the point of almost being obsessive? I mean does he walk a few steps, stop and chew, then walk a few more steps, stop and chew again? Does he drag his back end on the ground, too? Does this happen only certain times of the day, like right after walking somewhere? Have you cleaned his back feet with hydrogen peroxide and rinsed with clean water yet?

Hello,

My dog only chew his legs when he is resting or laying down.

I haven't tried the hydrogen peroxide but i did cleanse his leg with water and soap. But it doesn't really help that much.

Thank you.

my new beagle pup does that too, I think hes just stupid, there isnt anything wrong with his foot, hell bite his own tail or ears if he can get a hold of it.

Mites are microscopic. you can't see them.
if you look really close to where he is itching can you see any little things on his fur?
to check to see if he has lice,or fleas you can brush up his fur and if you see anything fly up it can be either one of them.
but it can be dandruff too. so if you not sure take him to the vet and have them look themeselves.

The soap may be aggravating the situation, especially if it's normal soap like you and I would use and it hasn't been rinsed off thoroughly. It sounds like bugs of some kind. I would suggest taking the dog to a groomer for a flea dip, unless you have the resources to do it yourself. If that doesn't do it, that I'd say it's a skin rash of some sort and the vet would need to look at it and prescribe some topical medication. Good luck. http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hello,

Thanks for the advise.

I put my dog in a small tub, with an inch of water, with Dettol.

He stood there for about 5 minutes and i did it for 3 days. After that, it seems like he is not chewing, biting, and licking his paws anymore.

I think it could be some really tiny mites that are hidden in his paws.

I think the Dettol did the trick. It must have helped to kill the mites/germs in his paws.

Lynn, my dog does chase his tail too. But i think he is just playing with his tail. Quite hilarious to see him turning in circles to get his tail. http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif
