no i dont think that they can be kept together. yu may be able to if you get one of those like huge breeder cages. there like 5 feet tall and you can have more tahn 2.

Even if they are male and female? They cant live in harmony, I dont mind the baby part, I have close ties to the local pet store and he said he'd be willing to help out with the babies.

LOL! @ that.
Black Bears are just normal black Syrians and not a new hamster at all. Nither are they calmer than other Syrinas. I had 2 - 1 was nice and laid back but the other was a viscous little bugger.

yes that is what they r trying to warn u about
syrians can't be kept together.. unless when a female is in heat.. then a male is permitted to be with her

ya they are basically a subspecies of syrians, but bread to be bigger, and well there common color is black
PyscoFalcon

There NOT a subspecies of Syrians. There's not subspecies. Show animals are bigger than pet shop animals - this goes for ALL colours. ANY animal should be bred for temprament.

a history of black bears
one litter of syrians a lot of black hamsters were found and people liked them so they were bred for size in shows

I had the same question,But recently bought a pair of black bears and they were living together at the pet shop and agianst everything I have read about these hamsters, they live well together, never fight. The pet shop has been wondering why they havent mated , said must be hard to breed or something, well have had them a week, and they just had babies a few days ago, HELP:eek: , the male isn't bothering the babies and seems to be even helping keep the babies warm, I dont knwo what is going on, but i am a first time hamster owner and totally confused after reading about this breed and watching them do right the oppisite of what i read...who knows, any info would be great ....later

I forgot to memtion in my earlier post, that these black bears having been living together in harmony at the pet store for several months, I have heard that they will kill each other and read it online, but the pet shop owner assured me they get along fine together and have since she got them, I guess dont always believe what you read.

They will only fight AFTER they MATURE (they can have babies from 4 weeks which is NOT mature)
There always young in stores so most will get along. Please seperate NOW before you not only loose the babies but 1 of the adults too and what are you doing breeding them if you can't look after the adults properly?

I did not intentionally breed these hamsters, the female was evidently pregnant when I bought them, she had babies 3 days after I brought them home from the pet shop. I asked the petshop owner when i bough tthem what sex they are casue I didnt want babies everywhere, but she said she has had these hamsters for around six months together in the store and they have never had babies, so told me not to worry about it, and said that if by chance they did breed she would buy all the babies back,( since they are rare in our area), but doubted they would ever have babies so i sholdnt worry about it, and not knowing a great deal about hamsters i took her word for it, now, after posting here yesterday, i started worrying about the babies saftey and went and bought another cage for the male and moved him out, but the pet shop and another local one in my area said that black bears are fine together if there oppisite sex and no babies are present, said they do it all the time and never have any problems with them killing each other,so that is the latest scoop in my new hamster dilemma.

You people make me sick. Blackbear moma is not some irresponsible kid! Lay off!
I fully believe there are exceptions to every rule- I'm sure Blackbear moma is capale of observaing her hamsters- if a problem develops I'm sure she'll take care of it- she wants to share this marvelous phenomenon with us and you people treat her like a criminal.

thank you for the support, I am 30 yrs old and have had pets all my life, granted I am a new hamster owner and came here for advice and to learn more about my new pets, I do need advice but dont need to be chastized or belittled or treated like Im an irresponsible idiot. I would not ever breed an animal without the proper info, and this was something that was out of my control. Iam glad to see not everyone at this site is mean and quick to judge others in a bad light. After all Im a police officer and know from experience , things arent always as they seem.
take care,

But why do the animals have to suffer just cos we think there the exception?
Black Bears are just another name for a black Syrian. Syrian hamsters are solitary and will fight to the death if left together. They live alone in the wild so why force them to live together in captivity. Sure they might get on for a while but 1 day you'll find 1 or both dead, you can't watch them 24/7 so why put so much stress on them etc
It's people that do that, that make me sick.

i started worrying about the babies saftey and went and bought another cage for the male and moved him out
She's already seperated them, as she said quite clearly.
what are you doing breeding them if you can't look after the adults properly?
Why insult people? There are a few people on here that have raised many hamsters over many years and their advice and info is very valuable, but that gives them no right to act condescending toward newcomers, or any one for that matter. It's people that do that, that make me sick.

Pet lover 4 if you still don't have a home by the weekend of July 4th email me at Flutterby31883@yahoo.com, I'm going there to visit family that weekend.
I know Syrian Hammies cannot be kept together but I have heard of a case or two where they were kept together thier whole lives without an incident, how I don't know, but it does sometimes happen. Cats are also solitary aniamls but can usually get along, maybe it's a domestication process I don't know.
I agree that is it wrong to jump on someone for being mis informed, I see that alot, I've done my fair share but there was a reason for it like for Hamsterbot or whatever his name is. Humping on people only makes them defensive and what to leave, if they really want to learn then they can't or feel they can't due to being attacked, I think we all could due to be a little nicer to everyone, at least till we find out the story, if they are a troll or show troll like signs we should ignore and report, I know that is hard at times.

I totally agree with falcon. They live together in the pet stores because they have to and because most are young, but they will fight to the death. They do not do well with others. They do better alone. Even in the pet stores they fight. When I purchased mine there were some that had wounds, even the one I got had a wound on his right side which healed well , thanks to vita drops. Please separate your Hammy's or they will kill one another.

Here is my lovely Maggie - right after I rescued her from a pet store. I asked if the bite I saw would be treated and was told, "No, she will be killed and eaten by the others". She screamed all the time and was so scared.

I brought her home, and she became quiet in less than two days. She is just fine now, over half a year later.
I complained bitterly to the district manager of the pet store chain, and its president, and I got the worker fired, and the store manager transfered and reprimanded.
Always be ready to complain in an appropriate manner to those in charge - or to Humane societies. Worked for me! Conditions at the store have improved - tanks are less crowded.

You can just make sure the female is ready. If you pet her on the back and her tail sticks up and she stands still she is ready. My friend did this with her hamster. They didn't fight till one day they fought over food, but never actully bit each other.

I have worked with small animal rehabitlitation for years. I have found that there are sometimes exceptions to the rules. I have also found that if you accept those exceptions to the rules and do not take precautions, you are sometimes devastated by what eventually occurs.
People who are new to keeping certain animal breeds are often confused by what they experience with their own pets. When they seek answers to questions, they need to have their questions answered fully and without critcism. I, myself, used to have to ask questions in a dozen different ways, before the answer finally got through to me.
So, I am asking the members of the Hamster forum to be kinder to other members, when they seek advice. Try to remember that he people on these forums are here because they care and want to be the best "parents" that they can. We need to help and nurture each other to that end.
Thanks,
Stephanie
