What is a referral?
I'm curious because in my profile it says Referrals: 1

It means who told you about (or referred you to) this site, if anyone did.

I would've assumed it was how many people that you have referred to the site, as you can only be referred once yourself.

Yep, when you sign up, they ask you if anyone had refered the sight to you. If soemone else writes your username down, then your referrel number goes up one.
