To start with, don't freak out!!! She is probably just try to regain her strength.

Give her some bits of hard boiled egg so she can get some protein. And some broccoli and carrots for vitamins. Just a piece of each should be good for now. Check on her every once and a while but,
DON'T
Open the cage
Try and look at the babies
Clean the cage
Try and pet her
and make sure the room she is in is quiet and stress free.:D

KEEP US POSTED!!!

she may be unsure of what to do if its her first litter.leave her be for a while and call the vet if you can. if you go near the pups she will not go near them again

That's the right stuff to feed them. Put warm towels around them or something because without their mother's body heat at such a young age they will die of cold.

No, I think it's a lost cause. I wouldn't risk her eating them. I guess you're mom now:)lol

yeah def. don't put the mom back in. Just keep feeding the babies and you'll do great. oh and keep them warm.

Don't forget to stimulate them to go to the bathroom. I think they are actually supposed to eat a little bit every 30 min or so, day and NIGHT, whether or not you go to school or work.

Yeah, you need to rub them like their mother would lick them so they go to the bathroom. And probably change the thing they are sleeping in every day or so to keep them clean.:D GOOD LUCK!!!

I had a hamster do that about two months ago when she gave birth she stretched then started kicking and shaking then she died so naturally I lost the thirteen babies also.. :worried:

awwww i am sorry for you. Tomorrow i am going to put my hammies in with my m8's nursing hammie.

7GameSavvy

I wouldn't do that if I were you. The nursing hammy probably won't accept the babies because of their smell and might hurt them. And she really needs a break. Her milk supply also won't last long enough to nurture the babies. If I were you I would keep hand rearing them since they are doing so well and in a week or so they will start eating more solid food and drinking less milk:D

Only if you want them to become a snack.

mfishman
07-31-05, 08:02 AM 07-31-05
yea dont put them in with another mom they could be snacks. also why would you do that. All the babies are doing fine. so just keep on feeding them. for me thats common sense

Common sense to me too mfishman, if it's not broken don't fix it.:)

Exactly, and why would it be okay to put them in with a stranger (friends hammie) when after a day you couldn't even put them back with their own mother?

7GameSavvy
07-31-05, 03:28 PM 07-31-05
That's exactly what I was thinking Jiffykat, I think shazzyswimmer just doesn't want to take care of them anymore.

Poor things, I would love to hand rear a litter (only if it was the only way of course).

hush up i do want to take care of them but i read that you could put them in with a nursing female hamster. 50 50 chance it will work. I have put them in yesterday and checked on them today and they are fine. bye

Hmmm, am I the only person here who is more than a little suspicious of this whole thread?

Convenient that somehow a 12 year old 'hamster breeder' who has managed 48+ hours of hand-rearing hamster pups from birth (an area where I must say, even the most experienced REAL breeders have failed in the past)
Then 'conveniently' has a friend who's hamster had 'just' weaned her litter.. AND.... well what do you know? The other hamster has taken on this litter?

I'm not convinced I'm afraid... :irked:

Appologies if you are on the level Shazzy, but you gotta admit... it does sound somewhat a contrived story? :sarcastic

I agree. Its nearly impossible for hamsters under 10 days to be sucessfully hand reared. I haven't heard a single case of even the most experienced hamster breeder having the luck this 12 year old who knows nothing did. Most die within 24 hours. We also advised this person months ago not to breed, 12 year olds have no business breeding animals. And the chances of another hamster mom accepting a strange litter are no way 50/50, try about one in a hundred.

erm.. excuse me but we have had help from the vet and my family duh. a twelve ear old girl cant look after a litter around the clock. so watever if you think this is fake but all i want is support.

Yep, people will believe anything on the net. It's probably fake, even if she did have help, a non-hammy family couldn't raise the litter, I think it would actually increase the chance of death.

Oh, and shazzyswimmer you have no right to tell me to hush up. If you have the right to make up such an unbelievable story then I have the right to post my opinion on it.:)

i really didnt know much about raising litters. i bought a pregnant hamstette and got lucky. i did look up some info when it happened but for the most part i wasnt sure what to do. of course i had enough brains to remove the other hamsters. especially since they were both males! [mama was suppose to be a boy too]

the pet store also told me it was okay to touch the babies to clean to the cage :/ i wasnt a member of this forum back then. luckily mama didnt seem to mind and everything was fine.

Yeah you were lucky!!! But I guess with dwarfs because they often have smells from other hams in the cage on their babies they don't get as freaked out as Syrians get.
