Hazel, one of my two my dwarf hamsters, is gone. And I can't figure out why. She was fine yesterday, acting completely normal. I went to change her food and water today and found her. The worst part was her cagemate Nutmeg tried to "clean up" and well... basically ate half of her. The only thing I can think of, was a fight between two of them, as they often scuffled but NEVER drew blood. But Nutmeg is unmarked, and the other half of Hazel is too. I can't understand it, I've never heard of an animal not showing symptoms before dying. She was under a year I believe, I got both of them at 4-6 months of age, and I've had them since February.
I hope she's at peace, wherever she is. This really hasn't been a good week for my animals. I lost one of my gerbils three days ago from an accident that could have been prevented, so completely my fault. But here I'm at a loss. She wasn't the friendliest hamster, I never was able to tame her and no matter what I did she always bit, though she was getting better. It doesn't mean I loved her any less.
RIP Hazey

Aww sorry to hear about your loss. I had the same thing happen to one of my dwarf hammies. I came home from school and she had past away but no one ate her. The sad thing about it was that my other three hammies were curled up sleeping right next to her. The only reason I knew she was dead was that I went to pick her up and hold her and she was stiff.

I'm very sorry to hear about Hazel. Her pictures are so cute. You certainly have been through a rough time lately with your pets. I hope things will be looking up for you soon.

Hi Chaos,
Although some hamsters may seem fine on the outset, there is still a chance that something is going wrong with her, internally. Once symptom is in her biting. It is true that some hamster r just simply difficult to tame, hence the biting. It is also common though, for hamster to become rather edgy and "bad-tempered" (jus like how humans are), and hence the biting. It could also be what you'd mentioned, a fight has broken up between her and her roomies.
"Cannibalism" would likely take place when a hamster passed away. This is how it goes for hamsters in the wild too. "Food" are not wasted. So even though it seems grossed to us humans, we just have to understand this is the hamster way.
All the best to you and your pets. :)

I'm sorry about her. She was totally adorable. She look just like our Bubbles. Luckily, when Buttercup died, Blossom and Bubbles didn't try to "clean up." They just slept with her corpse until I realized what happend and took her out.

I had this happen to some of my dwarf hamsters. I would see them sort of play fighting and then the next day one of them would be half eaten. I just guessed that when one of them bit and drew blood, it tempted him to keep going and eat what he could. I even had a mommy hamster that was fine one morning and when I came from school her 2nd litter was eating her body while daddy was asleep in the corner of the cage. I miss every single one of them that I lost including the ones that died of natural causes.

:( so sorry to hear about your loss, it is never easy to see a pet like that, and i know it is even harder when you don't know why. your hammy was adorable, and i know that you tried your best, she will be waiting for you. kindness never goes un-noticed with pets, thats what i believe.

Thanks everyone, this post is a bit old but that's alright. Her ex-cagemate is actually doing much better, acting like she did before Hazel died so I think she'll adjust to being alone.

Not to totally pick on you, but that is a good example of why you should always make sure oyu are logged out of things. Like at my college, if you log off the computer, but not the messangers, when the next person signs onto the computer, it will automatically log them into your messanger.
