Hello,

My hamster has been having a rough time. He ruptured one of his eyes and required surgery. The surgery was done on Thursday night. We brought him home yesterday, and he seemed groggy, but overall OK. Today, he seems to be having a hard time. He is laying on his side and breathing with his mouth open. He is not very responsive when I touch him. I am wondering if this could all be from the anesthesia or if it is a sign of the end. If anyone has any advice for me, I would love to hear it. I want to make sure my poor Stuart is comfortable.

Thanks,
L

Hi,

Given the right amount of anesthesia can be a difficult task on an animal so small. We just aren't too certain if the little fella can take it or not. Stress is another factor which can take a hamster down quickly.

If possible, get him to the vet to see if anything can be done and try not to bother him too much in the meantime. Haven't said this, you still have to be mentally prepared since rapid breathing is a bad sign...

All the best to Stuart,
HC

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, Stuart passed away last night. He suffered a great deal.

I don't think it was the anesthesia that killed him. The vet prescribed Tylan and I had been giving it as directed. In my search to find out how to help Stuart, I read that Tylan is toxic to hamsters. I am extremely upset by this. I feel like I killed him by trying to help him.

I took the poor little guy to the vet in hopes of curing his injured eye and saving him from suffering. It all backfired. In the end, not only did he suffer, but my children had to watch him die a slow and painful death.

Very sad indeed.

I appreciate your response,
L
