I have 2 young dwarfs, maybe 2 months old. I put my hand near them and they wack at it like they are boxing with my finger. My short haired on the other hand comes to my hand. I dont get it. any ideas on why, and how i could get them to be more friendly? Thanks. :D

What do you mean buy the short haird? Dwarf only come in shorthaird so if you have 2 differant types of hair there not Dwarfs.

Handle them daily and they'll come round.

I was referring to my other hamster, a short haired hammy thats about a year old. It is in a seperate cage and he is the friendliest thing. Ill try to handle them more and see. Thanks!

well to raise money you could have them as allstar boxers :p but what you need to relize is your lucky they don't bite and they're porbably thinking your hand a newcomer which needs to be put in their place

You r not alone...my 2 dwawfs ain't too frenly as well and 1 of them is just plain mean. Humvee bit Dale on the 1st night i got them till the Dale was bleeding and i got to separate them...Dale was rather docile and dun struggle when i pick him up but ignores me when i try to get its attention by waving food in front of it. Humvee being the coward tt all bulies are runs away when i try to get near...one sniff of anyone and off it goes...if it runs into a corner, it will try to dig in vain of cos...when i finally manage to catch it by driving it into a corner and scooping it from the bottom, it will start to poop continuously onto my hand and scrambling at the same time...never knew any thing tt can poop so much in a minute...i went to test it just now and it dropped 9 poop in a min.
Is that a normal reaction???

some hamsters need more time to get used to us

i'd one female that my sis bought some time ago who's a poor skinny hamsters housed in a display with a colony of another color coat of campbells (can't remember which)

she was really... REAAAAAALLY nibby in the first place.. will always try to grab a bite from myhands.. and i soon realise that my sudden jerking actions (natural reaction from her bite) would simply encourage her to chase after and really go for it

so i decided i should also be the one to calm down, other that her.. so it was like a do or die situation for me then(u can't imagine how determined i was on this little one).. bite? yeah go ahead.. my hands remains... no movement... and she soon lost interest in biting it :D

makes perfect sense to me, HAMZ- i've always said, in the case of a cat, you get yourself scratched worse by jerking away- they go for you more aggressively. Our Tomcat, George, likes to play rough, but if you don't pull away and stand up to him when he grabs for you, he soon calms down and plays nice. He just naturally grabs thigs like that, though, he holds his food dish in his claws when he eats.

for the pooping hammy what you do is not move or let him go when he does it you just hold him and he'll run out of poop and calm down
