8 months and you still don't know anything about her? You could be hurting your turtle if you don't know anything about her ALWAYS o your research before getting any animal here's a good website that tells you how to care for RES http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Bookstore/6127/res.html

i hope you look up some info about RES because you could be killing yours if you dont know what youre doing also take it to the vet and tell them to do a fecal check and just do a check up you should do a check up twice a year and a fecal once or twice a year

OK - let's all calm down here.
I think the main issue here is that no pets should be given as presents especially something as complicated as a chelonian. Tortoises and turtles are specialist animals requiring much more care than is recommended by the average pet store. Tanks for tortoises and turtle islands for terrapins are nothing short of a death sentence. It is a pity that this sort of information is still being given out as well meaning pet owners are following these instructions not knowing any better, so the fault lies with the dealer :-(
Your tortoise/turtle may appear to be thriving in these conditions but over a course of time illness's will start to appear and your pet will more than likely die :-( It take something like 20 years to kill a tortoise kept in a back yard under pet shop guidelines and that is a long time to suffer. As torts do not curl up into a ball when ill or whine and cry to let you know they are feeling unwell it is a long time before we realise they are seriously ill. By then it is often too late as kidneys liver etc can all be affected beyond repair. Before anyone gets a pet they should read up about it thoroughly and if this pet is given as a gift then the information should be sought out as soon as possible to prevent further sufferring. The hardest part is often having to come to terms with the fact that you have spent lots of unnecesary money at the pet shop and you must no longer use things such as tanks for tortoises, heat mats (which are intended for snakes) and the various complete foods which are all unsuitable and will cause rapid growth resulting in failing kidneys and metabolic bone disease. Once this has been realised and a new start has been made then you are well and truly on the road to providing a decent home for your pet. Remember if he doesn't get it in the wild he probably doesn't need it now either ;-)
Take care
:D
