Hi!
I was wondering how to build simple pole-and-rail jumps cheaply!!
we have some wood in the backyard but how do you build the poles? the rails are pretty simple i think...
any advice or INSTRUCTIONS would help!

Call your local cooperative extention office and ask for the plans.
4-H has several different plans for building jumps.

You can make jumps out of straw bales, barrels and for the poles - painted carpted tubes (the big rolls that hold carpets until all gone)

only if you don't mind killing your horses legs and possibly getting hurt
there is a reason jumps are built to "break away.

What are you onabout killing them?
As long as no sharp bit and they fall to the gound and move it a horse clips them then there safe.
Straw deffinatly scatters if hit.

not to be trying to argue or anything but.....
cross country jumps don't fall if a horse knocks them.
so jumps that don't fall won't kill a horse's legs.
But if ur horse has never had jumps that don't fall I would introduce a few small ones first. Well even before you do that you should make sure he or she can take jumps that fall. He or she should also wear wraps or boots and be well conditioned. Good Luck w/ getting jumps though.

we are building some jumps. Really cool ones too. Just print a pict. out of a jump and ask someone good at making stuff to make the standereds. Then you can go wild painting them. You can also make walls easily. If you know someone thats good w/ their hands, just ask them to help. My dad is doing mine. You can get really creative. You can use tires, picket fences, them caution rails that tells you not to enter an area( u no the ones that tell you not to drive into an area) Hey, i've seen a woman jump a picnic table the ones with benches too. and she was bareback and w/ no bridle nor halter. It was Linda Parrali. Ne way (sorry for getting off topic) just get creative. RELEASE YOUR ARTISTIC SIDE.
Good Luck

Shemmyboy why don't you try www.google.com?
I don't get why you can't find any plans. They're all over the internet.

i have one thing to say to you PVC piping it's cheap and safe! you can get at hardware stores or supply stores! It's awesome stuff! If you need standards I suggest the "Blok" system.. you can find it in state line tack and they are really cheap!

i would call your local lumber yard for poles. i really wouldn't make jumps out of scrap wood because there can be nails in it that you can't see and the wood can be very unstable and can break very eaisly. i would inspect the wood that you have very very carefully.

This may help.... I don't do jumping and I don't know a lot about it, so I'm not sure if this is what you need...
