Sorry this sounds like such a dumb question; but do you have a bond with your hamster? The ones Ive owned (long time ago) they were pretty affectionate towards me, but one was sort of skittish.. could any of you give me your opnion on mainly the 'general' personality of a hammie? Im considering getting another
Every reply helps :) Thanks <3

I know that all hamsters are different in their own way, but Im just asking in general :) Ive seen lots that bite and are skittish, but I believe if you provide the right care you can form a pretty good bond :)
And if theyres any breeds you'd think would be better at 'bonding' you can just point that out too :)

Once you get to know your hammie a bond just comes. I had Cooki 8 months before she trusted me completley. I just started getting her out more and more and letting her run around my room "where i had hamster proofed" and now she climbs all over me!!
You dont mind if i post a few pictures that show how much she trusts me, do you?

Laying on my side, she just hops right on and climbs over...

I'd say she trust me or that we have a bond. Once i didn't get her out one night and she was so mad at me it wasn't funny. She wouldn't come out of her cage.

Well, my previouse (sp?) hamster, Peanut, was a real sweetie, and we really bonded, and we were totally at ease with each other.
Horatio, on the other hand, is a really skittish, and fairly afraid of me (though frequent taming sessions are helping).

It really depends on the hamster. However, with patience most will get to be fairly tame. If you can get one from a breeder that's hand-raised, then it will probably more eager to play with you.

I wouldn't say that my two dwarf hamsters are affectionate exactly. They don't like being picked up and still try to get away. Once you hold them for a second though, they will relax and try to climb up your arm. ;) They like to explore new places and they like getting treats, and to them I'm just there to take them places or bring food. I don't really mind because they are so fun to watch. We've had them about four months, but don't get to play with them every day, so maybe that makes a difference.

my hamster isnt really that fond of me i think...ive had him for a month now and will take food out og my hand but that it...and i can only rub him if he is eating...he was 12weeks when i got him so that might make a diff too

My two hams are very affectionate but in different ways. I have had Smidget for about 6 months and she's just awesome. She'll come to the top bin of her cage if I call her and she follows me around in her ball when she's in my room. She takes food from me and once I get a hold of her to pick her up she stays very calm in my hands. I got her when she was only 4 weeks old and I think the younger you get them the better.

My other hamster, Twig, is a little different. I got him about 2 months ago and he will take food from me and he seems to enjoy being petted while he is still in his cage. Which is a good thing because he's long haired and I frequently have to remove bedding from his hair. He doesn't really like being picked up though and he tries to run out of my hands even after I've gotten him out of his cage. I got him when he was at least 8-12 weeks old and I really think that had an effect.

Sorry for the long post!!!lol

lol, cool!

Thanks! Thats helping.

Im considering lots of things, and a hammie is one of them.. I want something I can take places.. like, a LOT, so they could stay on my shoulder, or something :) I also want it to be able to bond with me, so thats why I was asking :)
I loved my hammie that I had a few years ago, we had a fair bond, but she died young :( So Im not sure if you could get a better bond than that
So far Im leaning towards a rat, theyre small, just like little dogs, basically :) lol, Ive had rats before, so I know.. so Im just asking about hammies :)
What do you think would fit what I want? Its pretty simple, really.. small and bondable.. but its just so hard to choose :)
Thanks

I would say if you want something relatively small and that you could take with you places, I would say a ferret. They are loads of fun and you can take them practically anywhere. They really bond with their people especially if you spend tons of time with them.:)

Good luck on the hunt!!!

Hmm, yeah, but I was thinking something even smaller, for a while I was thinking Guinea Pig or Rabbit, but even a bun can be a little big for what I have in mind.. so far Im thinking rat..

I have a dog, hes small but still big for a small dog :P.. but places are just so crowded it seems like these days, and a ferret would be just about the same

Don't get a ferret lol, My sister has two and they are great but a lot of work. And not a pet that you can just put in a cage they have to be out for hours a day.
:) Just wonted to make sure you new that they were animals that need alot and i mean alot of attention.

Umm.. What size of animal are you looking for?

Well Pink something like a bunny or guinea pig can't really go with you anywhere, and I deffinitly don't advise bringing a hammy or something small like that anywhere. They could get lost or die from fright. Although I think a rat is large enough to be ok going places, I think that's your best bet:)

i dont have a bond with my hammies. i think its because theres so many. its hard to give them the extra attn. i had a bond with the babies for awhile but now they seem more independent.

rats do better in pairs. so if you want one.. you should get 2.

I know, Fluff-- thats why I said Im not getting a ferret :) Ive done tons of reasearch, trust me
(even though I would have them out most of the day, but I still dont want one)
Savvy-- I know, I said I was considering a Pig or Bun, but if you read what I just posted I clearly said that they wouldnt fit my needs :)
christen-- How many hammies do you have? lol, I know that rats do better in pairs, no need to remind me, Ive had LOTS before.. LOTS

All of you---- Dont worry, Im not stupid :) I wont go out and get a ferret and then never get it out, I said I didnt want one. Im not getting a Guinea Pig or Rabbit either, as Ive stated twice before! And Ive also said that Ive had rats, I know they do better in pairs. I just had one simple question to begin with 'are you and your hammies bonded' No need to get all huffy and tell me not to get a ferret??! Where did that come from anyways?!
lol, sorry if that sounds rude, but I think my question has been anwsered, thanks :)

Sorry Pink, we didn't mean to get you upset, I understand that you have had those animals before and that you don't want a guinea pig or bunny but other people read these threads too and it's good for them to know. Besides, if you have had rats and hams before why are you asking us??? You obviously know what you're doing. And you were kind of rude, I don't think anyone deserved it, especially Fluff, we're just trying to help.:)

And actually I was just reading through the thread and you asked more then one question, you asked "are you and your hamster bonded?" and you asked "What do you think would fit what I want?". So I think we're just trying to answer your questions:) Chill :meditate:

Pink, I've read all you're posts, in fact I've read them more then once. Everyone has given you advice so I think now it's just your decision. But may I ask, if you had rats within the last year, what happened to them??? :headscrat

I don't want to fight I'm just wondering, and if you noticed I took the ferret thing off my post after further reading. We know you're not clueless but some people are and they need to know too.
