Hello everyone this forum rocks!. I just got a hairless hamster (I think they are cute ;) ---probably not a lot of other people out there think the same) Well I pretty much got everything set up for him.

One thing I am having a problem with is the food. I bought some high quality hamster food. But with him being hairless from what I read they say he needs more protein to keep him warm. I read that you can feed him some cat or dog food, like one piece a day to keep his protien up. I never owned a cat or dog (allergies) I was just wondering what would be the best cat/dog food for protien to feed him?

Well other then his dry food, yogurt drops for hams and hard boiled eggs are good sources of protein, So are nuts, except almonds because hams are allergic to the acid in them. Remember to feed yogurt drops and nuts limitedly because they have a lot of fat in them (especially nuts). Hope that helps!!! I feed all my pregnant hammies egg and they just love it!!!

Oh, and congrats on the hairless!!! They are kind of cute...in a weird sort of way...lol:D

anything with no meat by products, no cat food, as it is WAY to high in protine.

I personally use natural balance reduced calorie formula for my rat mix, which she (my syrian) gets occasionaly.

nope, no hairless right now. Unfortunetly, most petcos carry it, and it's usually the only place that does.

I only showed you guys the cute pics lol, not the ones were he is on the wheel and his extra skin piles around his legs, or when he has food in his pouches (freaky looking), or when he is all wrinkly. I still think he is cute all the time :) ...my fam thinks he is ugly but he is growing on them.

I got him at petsmart I was getting food for my fish and took a look at the hammys. There he was all alone. I had to pick him up. The lady at petsmart said they rarely get the hairless hamsters in.

Kaga if you want one just call pet stores around you, or try to find a breeder. The pet stores can probably put your name on a list and call you when they get one in :)

My pet store used to carry them all the time, but not anymore. I guess they went out of style, lol.

You get a hairless ham when you breed silky coated hamsters creating hamsters with only a few patches of fur, and then breeding those till you get totally hairless hamsters.

How many other people like them??? Show of hands???lol:D

There are pics. on the second page of posts and Hairless' avatar. I don't think he looks like the bald cat though, more like a little kid or something, or maybe a puppy....

You might want to do a little research too Kaga, they do have some special needs, like they have to have carefresh bedding or something else soft instead of aspen shavings and they can't have any straw hutches or anything like that because they will get scratched. They also need higher protein food so they can keep themselves warm and I've also heard they shouldn't have wire cages or tubes.:)

Yeah they basically could only have carfresh, nothing with wires on it (cages, ramps, etc.) They can't even have the plastic hamster tubes (which stinks :( ) b/c they can get stuck in there. They don't have fur to weasel there way in and out of the tube.

I wanted to have a tube in her bin that goes to another bin. I wanted the tube to go vertical out of his bin and like loop to another bin. I thought that would have been cool. I was thinking about using ferret tubes cause they are bigger, but I don't know if that would work or not due to Stewie being small. He might not be able to grip the tubes right :(

He is a youngin too, the pet store did not have the exact age, all they told me was he is under six months old.

Yeah, he looks young. Oh and in the future, instead of having to put a whole wire wall in so you can attach your silent spinner wheel to the cage you could just put a slot that is the height and width of the yellow key thing on the back. That's what I did:)

Do you got a pic with the wheel? Did you have to cut into the plastic?

This is my second bin I tried cutting things on the first one and it just kept on cracking. I don't like cutting into the bin. I stink at it.

I don't yet because my camera won't load pics. onto my computer:( But yeah, you cut into the plastic, a saber saw is what I used (actually my dad) it worked really well. I can't wait to get pics. of my bin cages on here!!!:D

What is the size of the silent spinner? I have the 6" spinner for my mice, those wheels are cool. I put the spinner on the stand?

HairlessHammy
08-04-05, 04:16 PM 08-04-05
Yeah it is the 6 inch one, when I put it on the stand the next morning it is alway in the middle of his bin. Thats why i hooked it up to the side

Those needs would be no problem for me to accomodate. I have kept hairless rats before, so I know about the need for more protien and warmth. Thanks.

Oh, ok Kaga:) Just makin sure:)

Hairless, I had the same problem when my silent spinner was on the stand in my glass tank. Smidget used to run on it so much that she would back it into the side and it would bang on the glass. I'm so glad I have my hams in bin cages now!!!:D
