Is it normal for dogs to take in deep breaths and let it go like a sigh?

And you can hear something like taking a deep sigh, or like a sign of relieve. http://petshub.com/ubb/confused.gif

Hi Kelly,

I'm new here, but I saw your post and thought I'd respond. I think it's quite normail for dogs to sigh. My bulldog, Picasso, does it all the time. He usually does it when he's tired and is about to fall asleep.

I don't think it is anything that you should worry about.

Hi, Kelly.

Yep, that's normal for a dog when they do it occasionally. Mine sigh when they are just getting comfortable and sometimes they'll huff and puff when they didn't get their way. LOL Spoiled rotten through and through. MY bad! LOL

As a matter of fact, I encourge them to take a deep breath every now and then. It has a very calming affect on my pup. Heck, I do it every now and then just to take the edge off the tension.

Now, I'm yawning. See what you did? LOL

Hello Michele and Heinz57,

LOL. I never know that dogs take in deep breaths. At first i thought if his lungs are congested and was getting quite worried about it.

But after reading all your messages, i am so relieved. *sigh* LOL.

So does it means that dogs take deep breath as they are tired, when they are comfortable, falling asleep, etc.
But do they sigh if they are sad, unhappy, worried, etc?

Sassy my cocker girl sighs everytime she;s tired, or doesn't get something she wants. Just huffs and puffs away. My rottie pup Rachel sighs everytime Sassy gets into a scrap with me. When i go "Hey WHO DID THIS!" Rachel lets out a huge "sighhhhhhhh i TOLD you that you weren't supposed to touch that". Sass looks suitably guilty. Guess which is the pup here :P

Not congested lungs. In fact, i dont know a dog that doesn't huff and puff at SOME time or another. It may mean a lot of feelings, just like humans.

My tiny toy, Halo sighs. Especially when she has been begging to sit on my lap, which she is doing at this moment. Sometimes she chirps like a bird when she wants up, and when I pick her up and she gets settled in, she will give a big sigh as if to say, "finally." They are so funny.
