Two Days ago i got a new hamster. Awww. he is so adorable. well my sister also had gotten one the same day, Befor we went to pick up our new furry friends we pulled out the old aquirium we used for our hermits crabs. Cleaned it out really well and went to get our new pets. When we went to pick them out i was not informed in what wet tail was and what I should be looking for in a new critter to bring home, see whenever I get A new pet i Research them as much as I can before i adopt them so i know exactly what im looking for. The reason i did not do this is because i didnt know i was getting A hamster untill i got to the store and my mother told me to pick one out of the cage. It was A surprised. Anyway at Petco my younger sister decided on the really beautiful long haired teddy bair white and ten. REAL cute. But when the Lady picked her out of the cage she informed us that there was poop ( sorry for my chioce of words ) on his butt and that he was building up wet tail, and that we were not allowed to purchase him, since he would end up dieing most likley. I had no clue exactly what this was so to me i ahd no worries really. So me and my sister ended up picking our new furry friends we both ended up getting short haired syrians. Mine is a dusty brown at his head ( Named Rascal for how energitic he is) and towards his back it fades into a carmeley color, my sister picked a smalled more skinny light carmel colored one(Name Peanut for the color and when he slept he looks like A peanut). well we got home and put them in the tank. We were planning on getting a secound tank for mine in a few days and that the one cage would have to do right now. So we got home set up the cage and let the hamsters alone for quite a time. For the frist night we really didnt touch or handle them. Rarley my sister or I would pick one up and say aww your so cute and hold him for a minute or so but then put them back. The secound day ( yesterday ) we ended up taking them out more, since we were so eager to play with our new furry friends. We were both aware to not touch them for a few days but they are jsut soooo... cute its hard to resist picking him up and letting him roam around my hands. Well the secound day we noticed a lil poop on my younger sisters butt that night. I immediatly started searching on how to treat wet tail what it is and watch the poor little guy. I felt so bad, I HATED to see him suffer like he was. All he would do was sleep and i would offer him food. That he usually would take. Nothing. He wouldnt Budge. So i moved my hamster in to a WAY smaller tank. One of those like 5 gallon plastic fish tanks. I ahd no choice i didnt no waht to do i was so upset i started crying. It was late at night and my mom was asleep with her b/f and didnt want to deal with them till the morning an d here i was A dying hamster ion one tank and another in a small tank... This was my first hamster and i only had him for two days . i figured he would only be in there the night so it wouldnt matter. so i let him out and roam around my room and myself till it was time to sleep. and i deicided that i couldnt bare see him in this small tank that you could totally see he hated it in there. I i TOTALLY cleaned out The big tank, the one PeanutButter in it. and put toaly fresh everything in bedding wood water. ane placed both babies in there, I know it may not have been the greatest choice but what i said i had no real choice. well by then i was about to pass out from being sooo... Tired that i ahd to sleep. so i put their tank next to my bed, and called it a night. and i still vividly remeber looking over to seeing PeanutButter ( my sisters sick hamster) Drink out of the Water bottle for A LONG time and Eat, and then Acutally Run the wheel... It made me feel liek i could finally go to sleep. To see him Hydrate himself i was so happy. Well i woke up Early Around 9:00 and talked to my mother and sister told her that Peanut was going to die if we didnt take him to the vet. My mother Loves them very much and wouldnt want my Younger sisters heart broken. So we looked on the Petco Recite we had to see what to do acutally and said that we had to go to this one vet and wouldnt have to pay A thing. So we called up and an appointment for the morning 10:30. SO we Quickly got dressed and rushed the poor thing to the vet. We got waited on and she looked and him and said that he is starting to get wet tail... so she filled out two prescriptions one he has to take with A suringe and one we put in his water. she also said that the main thing that kills them is Dehydration. and to buy baby food to feed to him with a surynge and if we have to froce him to eat, that we should. So we got home and gave him his medicine. and kept him in the small carrier tank while i TOTALLY cleaned his tank with a hot water and small bit of bleach ( the vet told me to do s to disinfect his tank toys and EVERYTHING. So then my mom got back with Rascals new tank toys and everything we set his tank up and is Very Happy We then set up PeanutButters tank ank Fed him once more. he is moving around a little more but im still morried about him hes was thin when we bought him and it seems as if he is still very thin. The vet said not to put any bedding in to place down Paper towels and put a little bit of bedding a corne. she said this so the Bedding doesnt stick to his butt and when that happens she says he has a hard time going to the bathroom. so we are now hand feeding him baby food, and his medicine. and every so often i whipe his butt with the A VERY damp paper towel since i know the Water is a No No. i then dry him adn place him in his tank to sleep. he is in my sisters room where she is on STRICT orders not to touch him or ANYTHING and she is usually not in there since she is out playing. Its very quite in there so i thought it would be fine. he seems to be doing fine. Getting up every so often to walk around. and at frist when we feed him the baby food he hated it but now he actually enjoys the food, its just not getting a suryng in his mouth that hes all happy about. My baby, Rascal is doing fine. hes CONSTANLY on his wheel. and as i said they are now in seperate cages. so no need to worry. I decided not to take him out that much for A few days since he has been through sooo... Much in the past 24 hours moving from differnt cages. The last thing I want is to loose him. He is my pride and joy. I Love Him So Dearly..... well any suggestions are appreciate. I truly am sorry for the long Post but i had to get it all out some way ......

Sorry to hear about your hammie, well you seem like you are a great pet owner and really care for him/her. I think you did everything you can, just keep giving him the meds and keep a close eye on him like you are doing. I wouldn't play with him at all till he got better. Seems like you are doing everything you can. I hope he gets better soon.

OK question was it regular poo ike whole poo or was it diarrhoea? Big difference, not all petshop owners or workers know what they are talking about.
Here read over this it may help.

Wet tail is from stress, usually. That is why you are suppose to let them be for a couple of day so they can get used to there saroundings. when a hamster in a petstore has wet tail you leave that store and dont buy from there because usually another is going to have it. Wet tail can also be passed on. which i see you know that.

Awww, thnkyou VeryVery wmuch Hairless. im really glad you think so. :)

I keep A very Close watch over him, We have been giving him his meds, and im sorry to say this but we have been having to force feed him, But NIcly Very Very Nicly i dont me Shoving it in his mouth. and then we let him rest the rest of the time, My younger sis will every so often pet him lightly but knows that if he is to get better not to touch him. I also Whip his butt ever so often so get some of the excesse "presents" off so he doesnt create sores adn also so nothing startes sticking to his bottom, since the vet said he wont be able to use the bathroom if things are pasted to his butt. so thats what we do, Feed him baby food, reg. Food, Water, and his meds.

:):):):):) Thnk you for replying. You ahve been VERy Helpfull
