Is a glass tank safe to use for a hamster, an does it cause any kind of health promblems?

glass tanks are fine but i would suggest cages because they have wires that the hamstyer can climb on if their bored or something.

the only problem with glass tank is air ventilation

so the placement of ur tank is important. and of course, this doesN't imply that u have it somewhere with direct wind blowing into it

Glass tanks don't always have to make a hammie bored. Check out what I did to my old hamster tank, which is more like a hamster city.

I personally think that glass cages make a hammie feel more secure. My entire setup cost me less than $50. When a small glass cage might cost 20 with only some cheap plastic accessories.

So there is really no problem with glass tanks at all. They minimize escapes, and make your hammie cozy.

I personally think that a cage is best- plenty to do, air circulation- and frankly (no offense) a lot more attractive than tons of cardboard and duct tape.

Here's a pic of CS's cage:

which probably won't come in, so here's the link:

And I apologize for the fuzzy pic. my digicam batteries need charging! LOL!

I plan many renovations, also. I am getting lots of tubes and stuff for my birthday in a couple of weeks.

I have 3 glass tanks. 2 of them have hammies in them, and the other one has 2 gerbils. I bought mine on sale at petsMart for $8.00, and I used some rabbit cage wire for the tops. I have my tanks placed on top of a table, and nothin' on top of them. I make my cages cheap, and they work well. Sometimes you just have to use your imagination! I'm not saying ya'll don't do that. And Left Paw and HamsterHedgie, I'll check out you pics!

yeah, glass cages work great, i have a few, but yes, lie some one else said, the inly problem is that it has to get good venalation, because its inclosed, and stuff.

yeah- Cream Soda has the Crittertrail 3! She loves it. It's my birthday soon and i'm getting lots of new add=ons for it.

Question? have your hammies figured out how to open all the cage doors yet? I have to keep clips on mine!

I have 2 gerbils (chip and chew - fitting names btw lol). We started with the Crittertrail 2 with add-ons then had a wire cage (without all the plastic), and now we have a glass cage. I would go with a glass cage.

If your hamsters chew the plastic and wire cages then there could be trouble. Which I know first hand lol.

They chewed the Crittertrail to pieces. They loved it!! I gave them stuff to chew on every day - multiple times a day. They had toys and other stuff that was good for them to chew on but the plastic was such a draw to them.

The glass cage is healthier in that respect. Yes .. I worried about the air ventilation (have a screen on the top). I have it on a table where there isn't a vent or blower near it. But there is a window in the room and this room has good air circulation in it. I clean it regularly too. They have plenty to chew on in there and a good wheel.

THey seem much happier now and I am not so worried about all that plastic hurting them.

Just wanted to say that if you have a hamster that loves to chew to be careful with plastic or wire.

THanks,
TIna

ya make sure taht if you get a hmaster taht can open the cages you keep them cloesed with a lock 4 a diary, or with twist ties or something liek that.

Personally, I think that glass tanks are the best. I bought a HUGE one originally intended for rabbits/guinea pigs that measures like 3 feet by 1.5 feet. It's really great how my hamster and her babies have so much room. Even with a wheel, house, swing, tunnel, food dish, water bottel, climbing toys and mom's nursing nest, there's plenty of open space. If you have lots of room, I feel that glass tanks are definitely the way to go. However, if you only have a little bit of room, get a cage, as the smaller tanks can be boring for hamsters.
