Hello,

I got 2 hamsters from Petco two months ago, supposed to be both males. But recently, I checked the hamsters cage and found lots of babies in the plastic house cover with bedding. I wanted to clean the cage, but decided not to touch it. What should I do?
my 3rd times having hamsters, and first time encountering this problem. I have checked a few websites, after comparing those pictures on the web, the babies appeared to be 3-5 days old, I have already separated the male from the cage. I just learned about how the mother will eat their youngs, especially if it was her first time or due to lack of nutrients.

Anyway, I can't really count the babies now, because they are all in the house covered with bedding. I just hoped they all will be fine, and none get eaten. I have feed the mother egg; WHITE only, and bread soaked with milk. Please let me know of any other ways to help boost her protein and milk, so the babies will not be eaten. Also, when should I separated the mother from the babies, their ages should be 3-5 days old.
Thanks ahead,
Teresa

Okay, I don't really know much about babies, but one thing I do know is that it would be a bad idea to try and clean the cage because the mother might be alarmed by having you around the babies and she may bite you or even eat her babies!:bawling:

Hey there. I've raised hamsters before, and I wouldn't recomend cleaning the cage now. If you get your sent on the babies then the mother won't let them nurse her, at least untill their 2-3 weeks old. It is better to put some fresh bedding into the cage when necesary. You were right about seperating the male from the female. My only thing to tell you about the mother eating the babies is that if she doesn't for about a week, then she most likely won't. If she doesn't let them nurse her, or fights with them then it is a possibility that she might. All that I know is that sometimes my mother hamster ate them and others not. The only times she ate them was if they were dead already or if they were disformed. Good luck with the babies and don't forget to makesure there is plenty of food for the mother to eat. Vitamin drops for hamsters are very recomended for her to take. Sometimes you can get them at petstores and you put them in the water. Hope I was some help, and if you have any questions, don't hesatate to ask.

it all depends on what you like, if you like a challenge then buy 2 dwarfs( they should be kept inb pairs) or a easy ride, take a syrian( teddy bear, long haired, there all syrians.)

hamsters are all different. dwarfs are social with other dwarfs but since syrians are solitary they have to be kept seperate. it really depends on the kind of treatment and the personality of the hamster. some hamsters are meanies, but others like ozzie, love to snuggle and love to give kisses and such.:D

Hamsters are really lving things. Most like to be held a lot(it makes them more social) but some dont.:rainbow:
