Im gonna start breeding dwarf hamsters. I just need a bit of help.

1. When the female has her baby's, should I seperate the female from the Male ( i know not to touch the babys)
2. How long should I not touch the babies for? 6 Weeks or so?
3. What do I need to do when the Female is having her baby or afterwords? Do I give her anything?
and Lastly.
4. After the babies are born, How long do I seperate the two parents for?

I'm not trying to be rude, but if you dont even know the answers to those kind of questions and you dont know much about baby hamsters you shouldn't be breeding hamsters!

if you don't know those questions then you shouldn't breed. It is FAR to easy to go look those questions up, than have other people do it for you.

And yes, why DO you want to breed? Where did you get your stock from? As petstore hamsters WON'T do! you simply don't know their genetics. how much vet money do you have saved up? Because if something goes wrong in labor, you need to take her to the vet, even if it's 3 am and the only vet open is an hour a way, and it might cost about 300$ to do so.

You should only have a few litters a year, not constantly, and you will need LOTS of caging, bedding and food, it costs more to set up and properly run a hamstery than you will get back.

Yeppers Sapphire is right, it's not a money making buisness and before you do anything you should invest in some books and look online. You should also make sure their is an outlet for your critters, i.e. people who will take the babies (prefferably not a pet shop).

I breed dwarfs so I'll help you out since over half of the people posting are just jerks.

No, you do not need to seperate the mother and father, they will raise the babies together, but unless you want more hammies you might want to consider it. Cause mom can get pregnant again right after the babies are born.

I am experience and I can touch my babies right away but there should be no touching until they are at least 2 and a half weeks old. At 6 weeks the babies should be seperated, males in one cage, females in another.

You don't need to give mom anything after the babies are born other then food and water. During the pregnancy she should have more protien though. Like diced meat, cheese, some bread dipped in milk or some boiled or scrambled eggs.

Like I said previously if you intend to have more then one litter of babies you can keep mom and dad in there. If not after the babies come take dad out and put him into a different cage. To prevent further breeding because mom will get pregnant again right after birth.

Hope this helps,
Good Luck

Hey Tia, I'm not a jerk. I just feel that if I give people info it will lead to irresponsible breeding.

I realize that is sort of hypocritical though seeing how I asked a breeding question on another thread. But it was more specific and this person doesn't seem to know anything. And in my opinion getting information from a bunch of different people who all have different opinions is not the best place to start gathering info.

I was just saying that they should probably start with a book or a breeder that has a website and some info on their techniques. That's what I did.:D

Or they can come and ask questions and get proper answers from a breeder like me. I do not give any false information. Everything I say is true to my knowledge and if I don't know if it's true I will not post it. Everyone has to start somewhere I know when I first started breeding I came here, but then again by that time I knew hamster genetics and was a hamster maniac. :P

Tia is right again, and another thing, the person that started the post was just asking a question or 4, you should not be judgmental, and dont argue over everthing! *Shakes head in dissappiontment*

I am not breeding. I wanted to breed because their are no pet stores close to here, and people want Hams. Only logical thing was to start my own store. Not for the money. I decided NOT too even without looking at this thread.

James, You're weird and no I won't e-mail you answers! You can't even spell library right and your questions sound like a 8 year old is typing. Learn some more information, in your case I won't give you help.

And what if English isn't his first language? I'm not saying it isn't, but simply because he lives in an English speaking area doesn't mean that he himself speaks it as well as we do. You know nothing about him.You tell people not to be judgemental, and yet here you do the same as them.

I agree, you just told people to lay off and gave someone else info and because this person doesn't have a perfect post they're not worthy of help?
