I have 5 cats, and recently one has been doing their business in my living room outside the litterbox! I cannot for the life of me figure out which one. I know it has to be one of 3 possible suspects because it is too big to be the kitten, and claw marks in the carpet indicate it is not the one who is declawed.
This has never happened before, and the box is always clean.
I ordered a blacklight to see if I can find anymore spots, but I had to actually cut out the piece of carpet and pad they went on, the smell would not come out! I planned on new carpet anyways, this is an old house and the padding is old crumbling foam rubber(probably why the stink wouldnt come out). I used natures miracle, febreeze, carpet foam, tide and water, and an animal odor eliminator. I dont want to have them going on my new carpet when its installed.
How do I track down the culprit with 5 cats???
Also we think a bunny is living under the porch, could the cat be doing this because of that(marking territory)? The porch is right near the places where I found the accident.

have a camera set up. once you catch the cat who is urinating i would suggest having a urinalysis done. inappropriate urination is often mistaken in cats (providing your cat is neutered and this is abnormal) for UTI and crystalluria.
a rabbit will not cause a cat to spray.........

I thought about that, a friend had that problem with her cat(male).
She is also pooping there too! Sometimes its no pee and just poop. It is only one area that she is going, not all over. I know its a she, they all are.
Hubby suggested putting food coloring in each of their foods in a different color to figure it out. Think itll work?

do all your cats like the new kitten? i would think that it might have to do with the kitten. i had a female cat that when i got a new kitten well we got two a male and female kitten she changed totally and some times she would go on the carpet out side the litterbox so till we figured out how to make her stop we just layed newspaper down around the litterbox sense one of the kittens like to kick the litter out of the box anyways. she just stopped after a little while but to find out which cat is doing it i would say just keep a close eye on the littlerbox and if you take the cat to the very and theres nothing wrong with it and its just going on the carpet just because then start treating it like its a kitten again letting it know its not suppose to go on the carpet and to go in the littlerbox sorry i couldnt be of very much help

Well she isnt going anywhere near the box, its in a totally different room where it has been since we got her. They are all fine with the kitten. She has been here for a couple months now and this is the first accident for any of the cats. She does it when nobody is here or when we are asleep, so I cant tell which cat it is. I have seen them all use the box when I am here or awake, so she isnt doing it on the floor every time, she must know its not right if she won't do it wen we are looking.

Vats can give you something to put in ones food at a time to try to figure it out.
Or seperate everyone for a few days in seperate rooms.
Good luck.
