Firstly do you want 1 or 2 animals, 2ndly what is your lifestyle, age etc.

Need to know all this before can help further.

Syrian hamsters are solitary animals and must only have 1 per cage.

However gerbils are highly socable andimals and MUST be in pairs or groups.

I have an online friend who has both gerbils and hamsters. She wrote an interesting and informative page on her website called "Hamsters vs Gerbils". Her website address is "http://www.abcgerbils.com".

Check this page out...it's a good read and it outlines the differences between these two animals. Each has their strengthes and weaknesses and it's up to you to decide which animal best suits your lifestyle. Good luck and which ever animal you choose, have fun!

I'm prejudiced and I should say that out the outset.

I prefer gerbils (and not because I breed them). They're more socialable than hamsters (in my experience) and they're affectionate. My gerbils jump up and down on their hind feet when I approach their tanks ( I have 6). They love to climb all over me as I sit at the computer, they stick their little noses in my ear and fall asleep in my hands while I watch t.v. if I have a busy day and can't play with them as much, then they have each other to play with.

Please, before you go out and get anything at all (albeit hamster or gerbil) visit the American Gerbil Society website at "http://www.agsgerbils.org" There's no need to buy fancy, expensive (and useless) habitrails. Learn more about them and then, choose.

P.S. All animals bite ( ;) ). I can't promise you that a gerbil or hamster won't. If they know you, your scent, and they're treated well, and they've not been frightened by anything, then biting is less likely.

I think you should get a gerbil bacause you can form a stonge bond with your gerbil, nomader how scared they are of you.
