Need your feedback. I know of a family near me who' have a litter of kittens...it was the second in a row for their cat, who they now have gotten fixed. I looked at the kittens and their bellies are swollen from worms. They also have fleas. The woman *said* they did Advantage to treat the fleas, and claimed they had worm medication in the house and would treat them, once I explained to her that their bellies were so puffy because of worms. They are being kept in a garage, without a bed or anything. They're just running around under plywood and in boxes....free to roam the yard etc. (they're not really in any danger...just feel sorry for them) I urged the lady to surrender them to the SPCA (no kill) shelter here. I know they'd get dewormed and adopted out in no time. (plus get their shots and get fixed) They're 2 months old now, and 2 have been adopted out, 1 is spoken for. That leaves 5 kittens...the family is in the process of moving and I think they are just sick of kittens...hence throwing them in the garage.
I talked to my friend at the SPCA and she assured me one bottle of de-worming meds would cover them all...I'm considering going and taking them off their hands, de-worming them, and adopting them out myself. But I'm worried I won't get them all adopted out...but I suppose my friend at the SPCA would take them if that was the case. Do you guys think I should
a) wait a few days, check back to see if they de-wormed them, and then reconsider my actions, and just assume the kittens all snuggle together at night to sleep
b) go and get them, give them a nice fluffy basket to sleep in and deworm them and litter train them, and adopt them out myself
I tell ya, driving away SUCKED, I felt so *guilty* but had to think on it. Advice?

Well , if anyone is reading, I phoned the lady and offered to take them off her hands but she refused. Apparantly she didn't have "time" last night to de-worm them (she's selling her house) anyhow, she said they'd be taking them in to the SPCA this weekend so I'll just check back and see how it goes.

Over the counter medication will not get rid of their worms. They need to see a vet to have a fecal donne to find out what kind of worms they are. The worms can eventually make them very sick.

I would send animal control over there. Make a complaint of smell or loose kittens running amuck or something. They also need to start their shot series.

If you offered her money for the kittens she would probably let you have them. Or have some of your friend pose as adoptedrs to get the kittens.

Good luck. Thanks for caring.

Well I called back today to check in and she said she'd taken the last five into the SPCA...I visit the cats there regularly and have gotten to know the staff, they are very good there, I will pop in next week to check on how the kits are doing.

Yeah please let us know how the babies are doing. And the great part they are in a no kill shelter. I commend you for trying to save the little babies. And you did save them by telling her she she could take them to the shelter.
