View Full Version : Transport provided to anywhere - Room desperately needed! (Animal Victims of Katrina)

Roz
09-03-05, 05:26 AM 09-03-05
There is transportation provided, with people ready and waiting, for upwards of 200 dogs and 150 cats so far rescued from the devastation of hurricane Katrina. What these animals need is a place to go. Kennels, boarding, vets offices, shelters with any extra space, foster homes and rescues. Even one or two open kennels would greatly help.

From what we know, all animals have been vaccinated and are in good health considering the conditions. There are dogs and cats of every breed and size. Some are in groups of two, three or four, hailing from the same family, while some are solitary. ANY KENNEL SPACE AVAILABLE CAN CERTAINLY BE USED. These drivers are willing to move these animals ANYWHERE they need to go. Absolutely anywhere.

The current safe houses for these animals are being inundated and some of these pets will have to be euthanized if they are not moved to make room for the incoming animals.

Please feel free to pass on this information everywhere. Every forum, every list, every community.

REMEMBER THESE ANIMALS WILL BE TRANSPORTED TO YOU.

If you know anyone, anywhere, that is willing to take in even one cat or dog, please have them contact Lynda at the information provided below.

They are also asking for ANY kind of donations for the animals - money, food, bedding, water, etc.

Please Contact Lynda V. at: 203 515 3024 (cell)
Home: 203 227 5308
Email: Lynda@portone.com

Please contact at any time, day or night. These volunteers, rescuers and shelter workers are working around the clock.

I will talk to my mom, maybe I can take in a dog/cat. Are there any other kinds of animals that need help? I can probably foster some smaller animals until they can go back home.

I shot Lynda an email. Told her where I was, a little about me, and my willingness to adopt/foster up to three cats. (I currently don't have any) I also have a lot of people interested in adopting cats, but will wait to hear back from her to see what is up exactly!
Thanks for posting this here!

I believe that would be considered spamming so I won't.

I'm not sure, but I would ask Lynda. I know some others have told me they're contacting Lynda to offer to foster small pets (like rodents and reptiles, etc.)

I have not heard back yet if they need foster homes or shelters for small critters. Will let y'all know if I do.

she did mention bunnies, so I'm pretty sure we're talking about other animals involved now, not just dogs and cats. here's the email I just received:

Thank you for your response to our email. THERE IS NO NEED TO CALL US. Please
submit the following information; Your name, your telephone number, your city, your
state and a veterinarian reference. We are compiling a master list so we can start
placing animals from a shelter in Jackson. Right now there are 240 dogs, and 100
cats that need GOOD HOMES. As you can imagine, there are going to be many more.
If you cant adopt, and would like to help out with a monetary donation, you can
do so by sending a check or money order directly to the shelter in Jackson or calling
the animal disaster relief hotline. Here is that information:

The shelter we are working thru:
C.A.R.A. Inc. (Community Animal Rescue Adoption)
Post Office Box 231
Clinton, MS 39060
they are a 501 C3

This was JUST set up ....
The Mississippi Disaster Relief Fund
209 South Lafayette
Starkville, MS 39759
(662) 324-9380

OK, now to give you all some information as to what is what. Understandably so,
its people first down there. Now, about our furry loved ones in MS. The animals
we are dealing with are Owner Turn Overs?, these pets have been turned over to the
shelter by their owners and need good homes. We are working with a transport company
that is currently down in MS trying to get our fist load of dogs. Just so you know
what we know. There are groups of animal disaster relief workers down in the disaster
area, they are doing everything they can to get these animals processed. There
is a RUMOR, A COMPLETE LIE going around that people are shooting animals. WRONG!
There are some severely injured animals that have to be humanely euthanized, but
the first priority of these trained people is to help and save these animals. They
are doing their best, and they are doing a great job. There are still some areas
the animal rescue people have not been able to get to- as people are still being
rescued from those areas. They are setting up animal treasonous, and they are working
around the clock. Please keep those people in your prayers. I know that there
are stationing areas set up at two sights, one of which is in Jackson. PLEASE DO
NOT GO DOWN TO MISSISSIPPI. (You will be in the way, let the trained professionals
do their job)

We don't know when, but here is what is going to happen with the dogs, cats, bunnies,
etc. that come thru the shelters we are working with: We have a detailed list
of the animals they have, we will match the list of animals to the list of perspective
adoptive parents. You will then receive a call from the transporter and can discuss
with her at that time where in your state she will be bringing the animals.
This is all done with volunteers, so go easy on us, we (me and my mother Lynda)
are doing our very best.
Thank you for your support, and God Bless you.

I sent her an email about 3-4 days ago and the email that Bombay posted is exactly what I got. In my first email I told her what I could adopt (including smaller animals).

I think right now she is just trying to get names and addresses and checking vet refrences. to weed out good and bad. Then prob contact people and see what they can and cannot adopt..... but that is my guess.

What organization is over seeing the transporting of these animals?

Once you get these pets, and the owner is located, who pays to get the pet back to the onwer? These people have lost everything and probably do not have the large sums of money to transport the animals any distance.
What if an owner is not located what happens to the animal after many months of being fostered? Does the person or facility fostering the animal take full responsibility for the animal and have to become owner?
If a medical emergency comes up, legally these are not your animals, can you legally give permission for medical care or euthanizia in extreme cases or do you need a court order to get the medical treatment?
If you do have to take these animals to a vet, then do you pay the bill or is there some orginazition that will cover this foster animal's medical bill?
Just a few things people need to consider before they have these animals shipped to them.

you can call her and find out and then post this information.
As far as Im concerned, it's a group of volunteers rescuing animals who were surrendered, I don't think the families are epecting to get them back.

I did send a message to Lynda, maybe I'll find out something soon, but if I'm keeping the animals for good, I can take in one cat, if it's just a foster thing I can take care of 2 for a while.

Hi,
I'm new here. I found out about this through a PTR program. I e-mailed the lady a few days ago, but it bounced back. I just tried e-mailing her again so we'll see. If I could make contact I could let her know that I can take a rabbit, chinchilla, GP, and maybe a ferret. I already have 10 cats and 3 dogs. Plus a couple of birds, turtle and 2 horses. Not as many as I've had in the past, but a handful none the less. Maybe I should call her? I would want to adopt and not foster. If anyone has any info they can share please do. Thank you.

Hi Lynda,

A co-worker forwarded an email to me regarding animal rescue with the displaced pets from hurricane Katrina. As Rita has now hit, I am sure you are still desperately in need of help. I brought the idea up to my mother because we have a cat and dog already, and we love our animals and are always willing to help any strays that come in our path. We have both decided that we would like to learn more about your organization, or program, and are interested in fostering a home for an animal. While we would not be able to permanently keep them, we know how much our pets mean to us and we would love to help someone else by taking care of their pets while they were getting back on their feet. Please, please, please get in touch with us about this. We have a huge fenced in yard in Chatham, New York, which is upstate near Albany. We live in the country surrounded by fields so it would be perfect for an animal or two. You can email me back at this email, or by phone. Here is our number:
(518) 392-4422

If no one picks up, then please leave a message and we will respond as quickly as possible. Thanks so much, as this is such a great opportunity for us to help out in this disaster.

Cordially,

Sarah & Barb

I have a friend who is looking to adopt a Boxer. She doesnt have a computer at the time so I am posting for her. I dont know if you can request specific breeds but she has really been wanting a Boxer and it would be perfect if she could adopt one that needs a home. She is in NH. She would prefer no older than a year and a half. No training necessary.

To all of those inquiring about animals:

The original author of the request for foster homes (Lynda) is not a member of these forums. This message has been passed around in many different forums all over the internet.

Offers to help or foster/adopt animals posted in this thread will not get a response (as they are probably not even aware that this thread exists.)
No one here is going to be able to provide you with any more information.

People who have EMAILED Lynda have recieved the following response:
