Waiting and waiting....

I have a female syrian hamster that I got from a petstore and they had just got her in and the people that "shipped" them to the petstore shipped her with all males. Anyways I figured she was pregnet and she was the only female so I got her ( yes my petstore does keep syrins hammies in 1 to a cage ) Well i know that their gestation period is about 3 weeks or so. I have had her for about 2 and she hasnt had anything yet ( she has not come into heat either ) now she has a nest that , well its hard to describe.....
okay she moved all of the bedding to one corner where a toilet paper roll is and covered that up, she went through that and then made a nest under all of the bedding.
She does not come out , only to eat and drink and maybe run on the wheel for a little bit. Do you think she is getting closer , what are the sighns. She is getting bigger everyday and I just hope she does not explode. Also I already have homes for all of the babies ( if and when they finally do come )
Can you please just give me some help I dont know if I should call a vet or what...

Hammielover- I got her because of the reason above and oh ya just a thought maybe I wanted a female. What if everyone in the world just got males , what would we bw left with..... females.
Yodelinghamster- i did not swear at you ( if you look at the word assume it says ass u me ...so that is where the saying came from ). And yes I did get her assuming she was pregnet and I think I was also doing a good thing by taking her because if I had not she and her babies would have been snake food.
I understand that you mihgt be shocked , but being shocked and jumping to conclusions are 2 diffrent things. I think you should have asked me for the whole story, or maybe it is my falut for not posting the whole story.
I notice with a lot of people on here that it seems like they can not wait for people on her to say what they mean , but instead they have to jump all over them.

I don't think he would have fed them to a snake, but if you say so. If that is true, why would you buy from a place like that and support that? I just didn't know what you mean't and thought you didn't have very much experiance because you don't know when you should call a vet or not. I think if you wanted a female, you should have gone somewhere else. If I am wrong I'm sorry, you left out lots of info in your post from what you are saying now.

Okay first of all, there is nothing wrong with getting an animal that you think might be pregnant. As fishie said it is better than the possibly pregnant female be homed with her than someone that would feed her babies to a snake. There is a difference between someone who purposely breeds animals when they know nothing, and someone who rescues possibly pregnant animals that don't know a whole lot about it. She didn't purposely get her hammie pregnant. Had she purposely gotten her hammie pregnant when she was uninformed, then you would have every right to jump down her throat. However she rescued a possibly pregnant animal. Would you have rather she was left at the petstore to have her babies there and have them either get sold as food or probably seperated from her too early. I googled it quick and this site (http://www.petwebsite.com/breeds.htm) seemed the most helpful. Good luck. I do disagree however where they say avoid getting an animal you think might be pregnant, yes it is hard on her, but I think it is better for her to go through it in a loving home, than in a pet store.

Dont worry i do have experience with them and yes my Hammies had about 18 babies the first time and this time she had 7 and all of then LIVED! Hope same happens to you and good luck! By the way when i got my female i knew and studied Hammies for about an year and a hafl before getting my first pair of Hammies! I dint just walk in in a pet store one day and decided to take them!

It is great that you researched them before you got them, but sometimes you have to act and then think. She got that hamster out of a terrible predicament. As long as she researches now and figures out what she is doing, I see no problem with it.

Sidenote- I wonder if they are ever going to get spell-check some people seem to have severe spelling impediments. They would have to have it be auto spell check though, because more than likely the people who would need to use it would be too lazy to use it.

First off all I have had hammies for 15 years. I know how to take care of them. A costermer also saw that she had been with all the males when she was "shipped" So that is when he said " Oh she is probley pregnet, sence this store is out of frozen feeders than I should buy her and feed her to the babies" I asked him if he was serios and he said " Yes " Those were his exact words. This is the best petstore byfar around here , they take wonderful care of their animals , but noteveryone has time to sit and interview a person before they sell an animal , I am sure if it came down to that they would have not it to the man if they knew what he ws going to use it for. All I know is that I did the right thing and by the way HAMMIELOVER he picked the female over the males because males cant have babies for him to feed to the snakes DUH , what planet are you on.

I did read the posts. So what if she did want a pregnant hamster? She didn't get one pregnant did she? She took home one that MIGHT have already been pregnant. I agree, it might not have been the best situation if she can't handle it, however, she is trying to get help from us to help her be able to handle the situation. I definately agree she needs to research into it so she knows what she is doing, or rehomet he female with someone who will know what they are doing if she isn't going to research and learn.

My question to you guys is why would you research for a year and a half? Do you read that slowly? You can find out as much info in a few hours or research as you can in a year and a half. New info on hammies doens't come out that often, that it would change that much that it would take that long to research. Most of the websites and books say the exact same thing. They just word it differently and explain things differently. So you have to find a book or site that is credible and explains it so it makes sense to you.

Also, do you guys think instead of posting three post in a row with one sentance, you could post one post with three sentances? You can edit for up to five minutes, so you can go back and add things. Because I am typing paragraphs and not just sentances, so by the time I reply to what you have said, I am at least a page behind in the thread because of all the one liners.

How big is her tank/cage?

Because we all need help at some point or another, plus i think she said this is her first SYRIAN pregnant hamster. Maybe she has had dwarf hamsters for the past 15 years? And she didn't make up story after story. She was just adding more to the first one. If you take everything she has said and put it in one thing, you will see that it makes sense. But how would you like it if you came here for help, and you were attack for trying to help out an animal.

Let me ask you this, if you saw a pregnant hamster/gerbil/mouse/ or what ever, and knew this guy was going to take it for food, would you just leave it and say, "oh, its a petstore, i don't want to suppor this petstore" And leave the animal to its fate? I know i wouldn't. I would adopt it and take care of the babies, and then find them new homes.
OMGosh i think they have a word for that: foster!

Thankyou so very much leah and jiffy. I have sabel in a 25 gallon with a tube so she can get to a critter trail 3 ( Yes I think I take very good care of her and she is happy and spoiled ). Thank you very much fishie! But if I may just give a little advice about the CT3? I got one for one of my hams, and I was not very happy. since it is mainly just hight, and the water bottle was so high I had to install a new one, also they are very expensive and not worth my while. You of course can do whatever you want, If you think it will be better than you can get one. I made a cage out of a clear 90qt bin. I love it and so do my hammies! I have made and added all kinds of cute toys! It all costed me a total of $17.00. I can post pics and instuction on making the toy if you like!

Yode I have a water bottle on each level of the ct3 and 2 in the 25 gallon. I am thinking about getting a bin so my hammie will have 3 things to go to. I wonder if that would be enough room to add another female ? I think I will wait to see if she is deff prego.

You can't put syrians together, once they are sexually mature they will fight to the death of one or both. So no matter how many tanks/cages you add on, it is not enough to add another female syrian to it.

I currurently have two dwarves in a ct2. I wouldn't put more than four dwarves in a ct3. If I were you , I would put her so that she is just in the 25 gallon until you find out if she is pregnant or not. If she had the babies on one of the shelve things, or in the "inter-active petting zone" they could fall down the tubes and get hurt.
