ferrets are not even close to rodents. their related to skunks minks and things like that. if you have a lot of Q's on ferrets go to ferretcentral.com

Nope ferrets are not rodents. One way to tell is teeth...a ferret has teeth similar to a dog or cat so they can eat meat. Not like those of mice, rats, chins, rabbits, etc. The sceintific name is carpet shark. Not really but I'm not sure how to spell it...they're part of the weasel fam...same as natureluverchik says and also polecats(said to be closest realitive to ferrets). I highly recommend three things
1. Ferret for Dummies(a must have as far as books go)
2. Ferrets magazine(I think has good info and is entertaining)
3. A local ferret society(cause no one knows ferrets like those who own)

No, Dozer, I think you are correct. The scientific name for ferrets IS carpet shark. with sub spiecies of ankle biter ,
packrat and nonobadferret.
Ferrets actually would eat rodents in the wild. There aren't any real "wild ferrets" in the US. But I believe austalia has an over abundance of them and is trying to get rid of them.
But I\must take issue with your statement
cause no one knows ferrets like those who own
I have never owned a ferret. HOWEVER I
I am currently owned by 5 of them. So it should read no ones ferrets like those who ARE owned!
