i adopted my chinese dwarf a couple months ago, and I'm so worried that's he's lonely without a hammie friend. Is there any way to give him a buddy? if i found him a baby male chinese or russian dwarf? or neutered him and found a female? thanks!

I don't think you can neuter a dwarf hamster. You hamster will be fine without a friend! Did you adopt him alone? If you didn't I think it would be ok to get a buddy. Your hamster will do fine and maybe even like it on his own. I don't know too much about chinese hamsters, so I don't know if you should put in a different breed besides a chinese hamster. If he was a roborovskii (I have two) they are they only hamsters that actully NEED or BENIFIT from being on their own. Other dwarves can get along and tolerate others sometimes actully like having a friend. All in all your hamster should be just fine without another one with him.

I heard that you actually can fix your hamster but the gas that they use could kill your hamster because it may be too strong for him or her to wake up from. SO fixing a hamster wouldn't be the best thing to do. Keeping a new friend the same gender is the better way to go . Mixing them up wouldn't be good they can be timid around their own kind. You can be your hamster's friend. Sometimes hamsters when they are older do not like/and wont let other hamster live with them.

If you are going to get another hammy, you could put a divider in their cage and slowly introduce them. Let us know what you decide!

does the divider thing work with hammies? i've only tried it with gerbils... so, if it's like with gerbils, then couldn't i just get him a baby male and put them together, because then he wouldn't feel threatened/territorial? hmm, yeah, i try to be his friend, but i don't feel like i quite suffice being all huge and lacking hamster language. any other ideas? anyone who's tried chinese/chinese intros? how about a female mouse? that's probably really dumb...thanks guys!

Introiducing dwarfs is very difficult, risky, and tricky. Not recommended.
Dwarfs do not NEED a friend like gerbils do. I would not risk injury.

^THAT is pretty much what I am saying! Your hamster won't get lonely!:) Or maybe you are kinda lonely and you want another hamster... Am I right? there is nothing wrong with that but just kepp them in different cages :)

actually i'm very happy with just one hammie, but my pet physic and I are both picking up lonelyness and boredom from him. He gets daily attention, has lots of space, toys, boxes, wheels, and a varied diet. So, i don't know why else he would be feeling that way. On the other hand, I know that intros are not a great idea once they're mature, which was why I was considering a female..would he get along with a female no matter what? maybe not...

Yeah i agree if you give them lots of attention there should be no reason for him to feel lonely.

 pet physic for a hamster? I'm sorry but that just struck me a little funny. I really don't think hamsters are even complexed enough for something like that. How could you pick up on lonelyness? What does this hamster do?! I really am sure your hammie is fine. I'm terribley sorry if that sound too rude but this is getting weird.

hehe. don't apologize for being skeptical! it sounds like hocus pocus, but many animal communicators have amazing abilities! In fact, everyone can telepath with animals at least somewhat with training. I was as skeptical as they come, but then saw it first hand, and it's incredible :) Also, hamsters are much smarter and more complicated that most people assume! I pretty much treat Ardley like a dog; potty trained, free range of the house, daily walks, etc, and he does great. Rodents are definitely complex enough for emotions like lonelyness, and b/c chinese dwarves naturally live in family groups, his feelings make a lot of sense. We're not picking up his lonelyness by watching his body language actually, as his behavior is quite unexceptional.

Well I'm not saying they are as stupid as fish. But I do know how smart they can be!

I do not think, personally it's the best of ideas. But then again, I've had too many bad experiences with this matter. My Rabbits were both female AND sisters. After about a year they nearly killed each other so they were separated. My neighbours russian hamsters were both male and brothers and they also nearly killed each other AND my friends Guinea pigs also.. you know, probably very bored of me now! Lol!
But if you give it the best of care and attention, your hamster will be just fine :)

I'm not sure about the other pets but female rabbits get very territorial when they mature and will try to kill each other unless spayed. Thats just the way they are
