My daughter has had her dwarfs for a few months. While we change the bedding, on a regular schedule
I can't help but feel that the little fellers need a bath. They were so tiny when we first got them, I didn't want them to catch cold. Now that they are bigger and alot more sturdy would it be safe to give them something like a sponge bath, or even a real bath in a bowl. If it is ok, what type of shampoo would you use?

NOOO!!! NO BATHS FOR HAMSTERS!!! The only baths that they can have are with Chinchilla sand! NOT WITH WATER OR SOAP!! Please don't wash them with that, hamsters are not supposed to get wet. Chinchilla sand (not dust!) is good for them. Just put it in a bowl and they will roll around in it, their fur will stop smelling, and also turn shiney and clean.

Here is what you should buy:

Never wash a hamster with water! Please don't!

I hoped I helped! :)

 Thank you so much for your reply. No we have not given a water bath. I have always found that when in doubt, STOP! go no further until I get facts. Pute and Huuby thank you for your suggestions.

You and your hamsters, are very very welcome. It is always a great idea that if you are not sure of something to wait until you find more info about it! Thank you for going onto here and checking first, other careless hamster owners might have just gone ahead and washed the poor little hammies! Their hamsters might have gotten a cold right now!

Ok, so if they smell or look like they need a "bath," then go out and buy them chinchilla sand! :)

You're very welcome and good luck with the cuties! :o

I own a Russian Dwarf hamster myself, her name is Kiba.
