I dont think it matters what it will cost as long as she/he is happy. But it cost me over $200 because i have 3 Syrians Hammies and got them a brand new huge cage for them which is divided because there is not way you can have Syrians TOGETHER! Keep that in mind when you get it ok :) Well what else, there is fiding, bedding, toys, chews, sometimes vets thats the most important thing. Well good luck

Well, what you need is:
1) An escape-proof, safe, and ventilated house.
2) A bag of hamster food.
3) A water bottle.
4) Pine or aspen bedding. (Not cedar!)
5) Chew toys.
6) Treats
7) Wheel
8) Food dish
9) Rolling Ball
You can get a set from a petstore. It includes almost everything you need for owning a hamster. It cost me about $40-$50. But it's not a lot if you think about it (you can use all that stuff for a new hamster if your old one dies from old age or something)! Good Luck and I hope that this helped!

Don't use pine!!! Use carefresh or aspen! Pine can sometimes be almost as bad as cedar! It is better to get a glass tank or a bin.

Don't buy, ADOPT!!
There are so many homeless hamsters waiting at shelters. They are cheap, grateful, and ever so sweet! If you're set on a certain color you can't find at the humane society, go to a breeder, who will breed responsibly...and that's my spheel!

oh, ps: I spent $6 dollars on all my hamster's supplies, and he was free from a shelter. Other than good food, dust for a dust bath, and wheel, you can make or collect everything! Actually, I made my own wheel too....anyway, let me know if you need some penny-pinching ideas.

you might want to try petting a couple of winter whites before you make your final decision. winter whites are wonderful and stay in your hands when you pick them up! lol unlike syrians.

No, Ramba, NO DUST BATH!!! Sand baths are good. Dust baths for hammies cause respitory problems. Chinchilla sand is good for them! It makes them smell good (well ok for a hammie :)) And it makes their fur shiney!

Yes, dwarves get respitory problems! This quote:
"1. CHINCILLA SAND (around $5.50 per bag) - This "sand" is safe for any type of hamster. If your hamster has oily or grimy fur, letting them roll in this will make their fur shiny and soft again. Do NOT use Chinchilla dust. It can cause respiratory problems."
From this website: http://russiandwarfhamsters.tripod.com/hams/id25.html
States that it is bad for dwarves!

is that true for gerbils?

Well, I am guessing yes. If you think about it, gerbils are the same kind of animal as hamsters! But I am not sure, just to be safe, I suggest that you get rid of the dust and get chinchilla sand!

Well, it depends where you get the hamster...
A good place to get it for FREE is an animal shelter! You save the animal's life AND you get a hamster you like for free! ;)
Usually at a regular pet shop, it ranges from $10-$17. Maybe more, or less, but that's what my pet shop sells them for anyway...
I would reccomend getting a hamster that you like from an animal shelter, a plus for you (free and a loving pet) and a plus for the hamster (Saved life, and loving owner)!
Good Luck! :)
