I think my hamster might have mites.
He has a little patch of skin on the top of his back where the fur is quite thin & his skin looks all red scaly. The rest of his fur is okay.
If a hamster has mites can it just affect one part of their skin like that?
Also.. he shares a cage with another hamster but that hamster shows no signs of irritation. Surely if it was mites both hamsters would be affected?

I am going to take him to the vets, but in the mean time.. can mites affect humans? I've had the hamsters out quite a lot & I'm soo scared now that I mgiht have caught them. I feel all itchy thinking about it! :embarasse

Thanks xxx

Do you see small moving dots in that area? Is your hamster scratching there?

This is what I found from a website that can cure your hamster if you see the little dots:

THE HOMEMADE ANTI-MITE RECIPE FOR HAMSTERS!
Thanks to Hamsterite Ellischia for this one!

1 pint of room temperature water
1 Tablespoon of Witchhazel
1 Tablespoon of Listerine (not flavored)
TREATMENT PROCEDURE:
Apply the solution to the mite infected hamster externally with a washcloth or put the solution in a spray bottle and lightly spray the hamster while being careful to protect the eyes, nose and mouth. After you treat the hamster it is important to clean your hamster's cage and accessories thoroughly, change the bedding and spray the solution lightly in the cage and on the hamster's toys and accessories.

Witchhazel can often be found in grocery stores but is more commonly found at your local drug store.
Please note: This is not to be taken internally, it is a topical (on the skin) treatment.

UPDATE:
According to Ken, the hamster guru, this recipe has been proven effective to treat mite infestations through a number of user testimonials. So rest easy young hamsterite, I think your hamster is gonna pull through!

But check with the vet about this first, I don't know if your hamster does have mites or not, so go to your vet to make sure!

Good Luck and I hope that this helps!

I have threads up on mites. Just look for them. I found a perfect solution and remedy for me.

And I assume you have dwarfs as they are living together. Syrians are solitary.
