Hi. What do you think of petsmart? I think its ok but Im not sure. I mite get a hammie there. Also, what would happen if a hamster dropped from say 3 feet from the air onto a cardbaord box? Thats what happened to one of my hammies. Last thing. What is the difference from a black bear hammie and a regualar syrian hammie? Thanks!!!!

Well, last time I went to Petsmart was the day I called it Petstupid. Maybe it was just that store, I don't know, but I am never going there again. When I went there, there was dog poo and pee EVERYWHERE!! It smelled awful, and the fish were mostly dead. It was just a bad experience...
But if you have just recently gone to a Petsmart and thought that it was pretty good, and the employees knew about the pets (I went to one pet store asking about breeding guppies and a guy said that they layed eggs! They are LIVEBEARERS FOR HEAVENS SAKE!!), and the pets looked happy and healthy, then go there!
My Russian Dwarf hamster Kiba dropped from my hands to the ground (about 4-5 feet) a week after I bought her in September 2004. She was unharmed and she is still happily living. It has been about 1 year and 1 month from the drop.
A Black Bear hamster I think is the same thing as a black syrian hamster. They are about the same size, their nature is the same, and they are well, hamsters!
This is what I found on a website:
"Typically a Black Bear is a black Syrian, a Panda Bear is a Black and White Syrian, a Fancy Hamster is a short haired hamster, a Teddy Bear is a long haired ..."
I hoped that I helped! :)

hamsters can take much harder falls than that due to their tiny mass and flexible skeleton: not that u shouldn't be careful! - they probably get headaches and bruising and whatnot afterwards. In my opinion, don't ever buy a pet from petsmart or any other pet store. Their suppliers are reckless and even inhumane. Find a pet at the humane society, or buy from a breeder who is looking out for the welfare of the species and only sells to good homes. The animal shelters are usually brimming with unwanted pocket pets, so you would be saving a life while not supporting unethical practices.

I have to say here the Petsmart is great!!! We love to go every weekend and we enjoy looking at the pets and walking around. Here they have a lil clean up area were if your dog or cat goes poo they will clean it for you or you can do it yourself. Here there is not one thing out of place everything seems perfect from bottom to top :) There is like 3 Hammies in like a 30 gallon tank with toys and everything very healthy and vet approved papers. I believe is the best place to shop. Well i think here in NAPLES,FL were i live everything is perfect and it has to be, its the 10th more expencive place to be in the whole USA :)

petsmart is wonderful for supplies. But even if they're doing a great job caring for the animals, they do not try to make sure they go to good homes, and they don't get them from responsible breeders. How can anyone justify selling hamsters when there are so many desperate for homes?!

i have a black bear hamster! the difference is it gets huge! way bigger than other syrians.. for the exection of the panda hammy. also its not as active as others.. but my hammy, bailey, loves to run around in his ball.. but doesn't like his wheel, i've changed it four times! all different. oh well.. good luck with your hammies!!
Also: i love petsmart it has cheap supplies like a 141 L. bag of aspen bedding for 10 bucks! run about balls for 3 dollars..

Babalopo, I have the same exact problem!! I can't get my hammie to run in his wheel! My parents stay up until like 3 so they should know. They dont hear him running or anything! What should I do? Also, what wheel do you use?

Petsmart is GREAT! Are dog has classes there. And that is were i got my first sweet gerbil. I personally, dont think any pet stores should sell pets but thats my opionin. Dont go to Petco. I have been there too. They dont take very well care of there animals. I have heard of them frezzing rats and gerbils when they have to many ( of course you cant always trust the internet!) Hope this helps!

The PetSmart here is great! It is very clean and also has one of those little clean up areas (that I have had to use MANY many times while I was there volunteering!). They have actually stoped getting small animals from their supplier, because PetSmart feels that their supplier gives them sick animals and they are looking for a new one (my sister works at PetSmart, so I get to hear all of the good stuff! Hehehe). I'm very happy w/ our PetSmart and wouldn't want to have it any other way! I'm also wondering, do your PetSmarts' have and area in the store called 'State Line Tack' ?

I don't believe so, but usually when I go, I am in the cat, small animal and fish areas. So beyond that, I don't know alot, especially since they remodeled a couple monthes ago.

I totally agree daddysgurl! :D I love Petsmart and got almost everything for my hamster and rabbits there (except for food), but I really don't like petco! And since I don't live too close to a Petsmart and don't get to go there often, I don't know for SURE, but I'm pretty sure that there isn't a State Line Tack Store, but I do know what you are talking about! I love that store. Do you have a horse?? :)

The PetSmart here is the best Pet store in my huge town. They have tons of small animal supplies. They take good care of the small pets they have. They barely ever get small pets... and they don't sell feeder anything, or snakes. The only problem is they house syrian hamsters together, and they don't put enough toys in any of the small animal cages. They have lots of dog and cat stuff, and are very clean. The onlu other thing i don't like is that they don't know much about the small animals. PetSmart is the only pet store Ill go to.

There arn't many big pet stores like Petsmart and Petco around here. Both about 2 hours away. But when I have been able to go to Petsmart, everything seemed ok. THere were a few dead fish, and the employees knew NOTHING. But cages were clean, not crowded. Everything had plenty of food and toys. In my opinion, they have the best dry goods selection. I wish my store could be that big.. :)
I have however, had bad experieces with Petland... :worried:

No, but I wish I did! I spend alot of time in the State Line Tack area, cuz I love sitting on all of the saddles and looking at all of the stuff! I was just wondering if anybody else had a State Line Tack in their store.

The closest PetSmart to me is a good hour away but I do go there when I get a chance. I like how clean and open it is, and all the animals seemes in really good health.
Oh, and the one I went to did have State Line Tack cuz that's where I got my bridle a while back. And they should be putting them in more of the PetSmarts since they sold there main store in Mass. to Dover Saddlery.:)

The petsmart near me is pretty desent.. everything seems pretty sanitary with not much odor from the caged animals and the workers seem to have some knowledge about the animals there. Even though they may say things just so you will buy something from the store, it is still pretty desent where i live. But i still prefer to go to a private petstore that is closer to me called Beverly's becuase the workers there are very trustworthy and give you both the good and bad sides in buying an animal.

where i live the petsmart store seemed okay. it lasted a fewyears before being taken over by pets at home. which is a better store. thatsb where i got my hamster from and the cages were extremly clean and i have no complains so far.
my hamster experienced a drop about 6months ago and she has been fine. when i dropped her (accidently) she did try and run, but i caught her. she was a bit nervous for a few days but fine after that. she fell from hands to a wooden floor but felt on my hand bag so she had a cushioned landing! :D

I love my Petco here, the people are very knowledgable and very kind. However, I DO NOT go to Petland, as they sell puppies and tell people lies about animals in general.

She asked about petsmart not petco. I like petmart better than petco, around here they have lots of great supplies, healthy animals, and very smart employees that know what they are doing!

Yeah, I live in a really small town close to Erie, like around 40 min. away, so I can't go there all the time, and it sucks b/c the only other petstores around are "Edgewood Pet Center" or WalMart(<which doesn't know ANYTHING about animals, so they don't really count). So whenever I go to PetSmart, I have to stock up on food! lol

Ya know peoplethis is really rediculous! I'm sorry but being against a whole company becuase of a few is a bit like being racist and I have to say I take offense here I am on the managment team of one of our local smats and I go through this same garbage in hte internet grooming community! A store is ONLY AS GOOD AS THE PEOPLE WORKING IN IT smart does have very high standards, unfortunatelynot all people that you hire do and you don't find out till you have worked with them for awhile I recently found out about one at the store I am atshe made a remark that got back to me, that she doesn't care what people do wtih their s as long as she gets paidneedless to say, she will now be watched like a hawk and when the time comesshe will be outa there I came in here to read up a bit more hamsters as I just recued one, but I think I will just stay over in the Ferret section steer clear of this

Last night, I went to a new Smart in Gainesville and I have ups and downs about it It was very clean and the animals seemed happy One thing that made my day was that I saw an employee holding a bird and whistling to him/her I thought that was very sweet I've never seen an employee do that at my Smart One thing that did make me a little upset though, was that there was a sick hamster There were three of these hamsters which were syrians and they looked a like they should be reaching the seperating age soon The sick hamster had a bloody tail and crusties around his nose That made me sick Otherwise, all of the other animals seemed very happy and I think that the employees are very knowledgable A Chinese Water Dragon that was there had a very cool enclosure, half was water and half was land Over the water they had fog and I thought that was just so awesome!

LadyV, don't get all defensive! We were just stating our opinions and there is nothing wrong about that! And your'e right, a store is only as good as the workers There were some good stuff and some bad stuff about both Smart and co and their employees

I used to manage at coI quit because their animal policy was horrible! Even after I explained to them proper feeding of Iguanas, they would not change through Corp and continued to feed baby lizards too large of pieces of foodthey were starving with full bowls of food Similar problems with thei spiders, ratsall their animals smart will listen and adjust properly if they don't know I checked smart out explicitly as I said I would never work for another Corp store They changed my mind!
