Hi
My year old male syrian hamster has a swollen rear paw this morning as he does wakes up gets something to eat and drink

After that i put some more food for him now his paw was ok then

Now ive come home at around 8pm (GMT) his paw is swollen up on the top of the paw

ive taken away his shelf so he cant jump and his wheel so he cant run as im going the vets tomorrow to see what to do

However i would like to know what actually has caused this he was at the vets a week ago for his nails trimmed but he has been fine until i come back today

Any thoughts please

Thanks

Lee

I have never even heard of a Syrian needing their nails trimmed. But I guess it happens. I have had dozens and it never happened for me.

New clean non-allergenic bedding?

Any cuts? Use bacitracin ointment if so.

Is he in a cage? I'd put him in a tank.

I'd remove any hay that could stick him.

Other than that, I will be interested to read other people's speculations.

Can't be an abcess as it came and went.

What about the bottom of the foot? There is something called bumblefoot which is a problem.

Yeah his nails we bending due to the length

But anyway no sign of damage on the bottom of the foot it looks a bit better but still swollen just about to ring the vet to get an appointment

He has a a cage that has bars on the top and things to bite on, on the sides

He has the same sawdust that he has always had that i buy

His bedding is the better stuff which is safe for hamsters its got recommended by hamster council on the back he has also had that for a year

il give an update when hes been the vets he seems pretty active and standing on two paws althought limping a bit

Ok been the vets he says it is a sort of sprain the back of the foot was swollen

He has been given an injection and i need to change him daily but the injection lasts till wednesday when he goes to the vets again

Hopefully the injection will work

Just going to town to get some more sawdust and shredded newspaper bedding as that wont wrap around his foot

Maybe he was climbing the bars and fell, and his paw caught in the bars? But, atleast he will be safe now since you are a good educated pet owner and took him to the vet.

Hope he gets better.
