I own a pet store. I have saltwater and freshwater fish . I specialize in snakes and reptiles of all kinds.
I also have the bunnys, hamsters, big birds and small ones.
I don't sell dogs and cats. There are enough unwanted dogs and cats in shelters. I take shelter cats into my store and sponser them until they find a home :)
Owning a pet store was my dream since I could talk. Plus, ive been around a lot and ive seen some crappy pet stores that treat their animals horribly. I wanted to make a pet store that had great, healthy animals and provided useful information on how to take care of it and HOW to take care of it. Most pet stores don't care where the animal comes from or where it goes just as long as he makes a dollar. Plus I wanted to help shelter dogs and cats.
It has been a wonderful experience, but it hasn't came without it's set-backs. For example, I got broke into on sunday out of the clear blue. They threw a rock right through the front door. They didn't take anything. They were after money, but I hide it every night and they didn't find it. I am not even a block from the police station and im right next to a gun store and they broke into MY store.
I breed most of my hamsters, bunnys, guniea pigs, etc. I like it better than ordering from companys because you can actually see that your animals are healthy and you know where they come from. The ones I don't buy, I buy locally from kids and whatnot.
If you do decide to do dogs and cats, do shelter ones. Ive probably saved 20+ cats lives now.
The amound of money it takes to open a pet store depends on what you want to do.. If you do dogs and cats, you will have a lot of money in kennels.
It can take anywhere from $35-150,000 depending on what you want to have in your store. It also depends if you have handy-man people in your family. We built all the stands that the tanks sit on. We probably saved about $2,000 on fish stands because we built them all. I also saved space because I built them 2 tiered. I pay $1,200 a month for rent. I cover it pretty easy. I am also in a busy location on a plaza.
Any other questions just ask.. I am happy to share what I know.
